Ordinarily, Independent Studies are done only under the supervision of a full-time faculty member. Tenure track faculty members have their own independent study numbers; graduate faculty members have separate numbers for graduate independent studies. Part-time faculty and TAs who wish to work with a student on an Independent Study should consult the Department Head first; there is no additional salary for directing independent studies.
The instructor for an Independent Study should ensure that the student
completes two forms. One is a small _ page form (Permission to Register
for Directed Study) which must be filed in the Registrar's Office early
on in the semester. This allows the Independent Study to be listed on
the student transcript with a descriptive title, rather than just "Independent
Study." The second form is available in the Department Office, and
is essentially a contract between the student and the faculty member (and
signed by both), making clear what the course requirements are for the
Independent Study. This is important to prevent misunderstandings about
expectations. A copy of this form should be placed in the student's file.
