The Department conducts its decision-making and policy review business through whole-faculty meetings, faculty sub-committee meetings, and initiatives emerging from these meetings. Formal meetings are typically scheduled on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 12:30—1:45 PM, although special meeting times may be arranged to accommodate the schedules of faculty members and/or to meet crucial deadlines for completion of tasks. Given the volume of work that must be handled to meet our self-governance obligations, it is impracticable for each faculty member to be centrally involved in every decision making process. At the same time, a good faith effort is made by the Department Head and/or the coordinators of projects and chairpersons of sub-committees to keep the entire faculty reasonably and appropriately informed and to solicit their input on issues of importance to the Department. Recommendations for action brought forward to the Department Head by sub-committees are discussed with the entire faculty prior to the making of final decisions.
While part-time faculty, guest artists, TAs, and other students are not
ordinarily included in faculty meetings, any individual may bring issues
of concern forward to the Department Head and arrange for time to discuss
it with the whole faculty at a meeting.
