First-year TAs will be observed at least two times the first semester and once or twice the second semester (depending on whether or not any new courses are being taught and whether any problems were apparent the first semester). Observations should be scheduled by the individuals involved. It is the faculty member's responsibility to initiate this. For new TAs, at least one observation should occur in the first month of classes the first semester. Feedback from all observations should be given by the supervisor soon after the observation, and at least one written report must be completed, with a copy placed in the individual's file. New TAs and those teaching new courses will be asked to do written mid-term course evaluations by their students. These should be turned in to the supervisor, who will discuss them with the TA. If problems are apparent, another live observation should be scheduled promptly.
Second year TAs should be observed once or twice a semester (depending
on whether any new courses are being taught and whether any problems were
apparent the first year). Again, feedback must be given to the TA and
a written evaluation must be placed in the file.
All untenured faculty will be observed at least once a year by a tenure
track faculty member; there may be more frequent observations if problems
are noted. The observer will prepare a written evaluation which will be
placed in the individual's file and shared with the Department Head and
the person observed. These evaluations should be done in the first semester
if possible, with feedback given promptly. The person being observed needs
time to correct any problems noted.
