The procedure followed for signing up for technique classes changes from year to year. Be sure to check with your advisor for the current policy.
Graduate students are usually placed in a contemporary dance class their first semester, based on their audition for the Department. Adjustments may be made during the first week of class. Graduate students may sign up for other technique classes of their own choosing, as long as the level is appropriate and there is space available. Injured students or students who wish to work on a particular technical issue may sign up for lower level classes.
To earn a 624 credit, students must take a 75 minute technique class 4 days per week. Ordinarily, this consists of two 2-day/wk. classes. Three 105 minute classes per week also count as one credit of DCE 624.
Students usually remain at each level of placement for two semesters, although placement at the same level for more than two semesters is not uncommon. If you believe you are placed at the wrong level, notify the Graduate Coordinator and a review of your placement will be scheduled.
When a student is taking two twice/week courses for one DCE 624 credit, she/he can miss up to 4 classes per course. Missing 5 or more in one of the two courses means that that portion of the 624 class will have to be taken again, even if there are no absences in the other. In other words, absences cannot be pooled between the two courses. When a student is taking a 105 minute class which meets three times/week, up to six absences will be allowed.
