Procedure for Technique Class Registration

(updated 2-21-08)

To ensure an optimal learning environment for all students, to ensure that Dance majors  can meet graduation requirements in a timely manner, to ensure fairness for all students, and to make the best use of faculty time, the Department of Dance will follow the procedure detailed below for pre-registration for next semester's Ballet and Contemporary classes and intermediate African classes.   (See FAQs for information about other technique classes.)

Students will register themselves online.  Students who are not eligible will be withdrawn from classes on a regular basis; this means that spaces may frequently become available in previously closed classes.  Students seeking admission to a closed class for which they are eligible should check UNCGenie frequently, as they do with popular classes in other departments. See below for details.

1. All graduate and undergraduate students who want to enroll in a Ballet, Contemporary, or intermediate African class next semester:  Except for students wanting to take DCE 111 or 113, you must be on the department’s eligibility list to register.  Due to privacy regulations, eligibility lists will not be posted.

Ballet and contemporary instructors will give eligibility to currently enrolled students.  Students placed at the placement class (which takes place the first class day of every semester) may contact the enrollment management assistant at dance@uncg.edu if they have forgotten their placement and are not currently enrolled.

Students who are not currently enrolled but who have been enrolled in one or more of these classes during the previous semester, or who think that an error has been made regarding their eligibility, should complete the Eligibility Appeal form below.  Do not wait until you try to register to correct an error; you should do this right away so the appeal can be answered before your registration window opens.

Students who are eligible for 112, 114, or higher will be considered to be eligible for DCE 232 (African).  Students with African experience who are not on the eligibility list should contact the instructor (Robin Gee, rmgee@uncg.edu).

2.  Dance major priority enrollment: Preregistration period (refer to the University Registrar's Office academic calendar)

DANCE AND DANCE EDUCATION MAJORS (graduate and undergraduate) may enroll (online, through UNCGenie) in the technique classes for which they are eligible, as soon as their registration window opens. Exception: students eligible for 412 or 414 should register instead for the 312 or 314 option.  (WHY?  See FAQ’s Box).  The Department will move you into the correctly numbered section near the beginning of spring semester.  Students who are not eligible for a particular level will be withdrawn from these courses, to keep spaces available for eligible students.
Through the last day of preregistration, dance/dance education majors may pre-register for a maximum of 2 credits of contemporary dance and 1 credit of ballet. (See #3 below to learn how to register for “extras.”) Through this date, students who enroll for more than the maximum in either ballet or contemporary will be withdrawn from all of their classes in that category.

Appeals for Majors (see form below):  Submit during the registration period for Dance Major priority
Dance majors who were closed out of contemporary or ballet classes that they need to graduate may appeal through use of the attached appeal form.   Appeals should be submitted five days prior to the last day of registration and will be responded to promptly; majors should then add these courses before these courses become available to non-majors (the day following the last day of registration).  Appeals submitted after this time period will have less likelihood of success.

3.  Enrollment for all eligible students, plus “extra” classes for majors:  refer to the University Registrar's Office academic calendar for continuing registration after the initial preregistration period:

As soon as registration reopens for all students, non-majors (including minors) may enroll for technique classes for which they are eligible, and majors may enroll for additional classes, on a space-available basis. Exception: students eligible for 412 or 414 should register instead for the 312 or 314 option.  (WHY?  See FAQs.) Students who are not eligible for a particular level will be withdrawn from these courses, to keep spaces available for eligible students.

4.  Disenrollment for eligible students:

In cases of high demand for a particular section of one of the courses listed above, students may be disenrolled from the section even though they may be eligible and preregistered, following the priorities below.  Eligible preregistered students who are disenrolled may appeal this action (see attached appeal forms).

In classes where disenrollment is necessary, students will be retained according to the following priorities:

    1. Admitted Dance majors (U435, 431, 403, or graduate dance majors).
    2. Students who have declared a dance major but have not yet been admitted (must be on the majors list as a U439 by the start of the preregistration period).
    3. BFA Theatre majors and Dance minors who are on the Registrar’s list of minors.
    4. All other UNCG students.
    5. Consortium students.

5.  Students not already on the eligibility list:

Contact the enrollment management assistant at dance@uncg.edu
Students must be on the eligibility list to be given permission to register for any contemporary or ballet class above the beginning level, or for intermediate African dance.  There will be no exceptions.  Students who are not eligible for a particular level will be disenrolled from these courses.
