GEC for Dance Majors

GEC (General Education Core) must be taken by all students. If your first major is in the College of Arts and Sciences, you normally have to follow the College Additional Requirements. If Dance or Dance Education is your first major, even if you have a second major in the College, you only have to follow GEC.

All courses must be listed as GEC courses to “count.” Check the catalogue and the online course listing in UNCGenie to be sure!

You need to take 37 credits of courses in these categories:

*Humanities and Fine Arts: Four courses. You need to take at least one course in Literature (GLT), one in Fine Arts (GFA--can’t be a DCE course), one in the GPR category. DCE 200 (required for students entering in fall 06 or later) counts as the fourth course.

*Historical Perspectives: one course (GHP)

*Social Behavioral Sciences: You need two courses that meet GSB requirements.

*Science: You need two science courses (GNS). We recommend that one be NTR 213, a nutrition course. The other one has to be in a different Department and must have a lab. Dance students have often found that Bio 105/Bio 105L (4 credits total) is a good choice; remember that you must take the lab! Another popular choice for lab science is ATY 253 (Physical Anthropology).

*Math: You need one approved course in Math. Some students who struggle with Math find that taking a transferable summer course at a community college is a good option; remember that you have to earn a grade of C or higher or the course will not transfer.

*Reasoning and Discourse: You need two courses marked GRD, one from each of two lists. Most Dance students take Eng 101 for the first one; there are also options in RCO and FMS. A speaking course such as CST 105 or ENG 102 is a good choice for the second one. You also need to take the “Marker” courses listed below. The Marker courses that you choose may also fill other GEC requirements (some courses meet category requirements as well as 1-2 marker requirements).

*Writing-Intensive: DCE 305 is the W-I course required in your major. You also need another W-I course; there is a special section of DCE 200 in the spring for Dance majors, and it is W-I. For students who do not take this section of DCE 200: Just because a course requires a lot of writing does not mean that it necessarily is a W-I. You are likely to find W-I courses in the Humanities category as well as GHP, but they may be found in other categories as well. Some sections of a course may be marked W-I even if all sections of the same course are not.

*Speaking-Intensive: You are required to have two S-I courses if you entered UNCG and/or the Department in fall 2002 or later. Your S-I course in the major is DCE 505. CST 105 or ENG 102 are used by many students to meet a GRD requirement as well as S-I. Some sections of a course may be marked S-I even if all sections of the same course are not.

*Global (GL) and Global Nonwestern (GN): You are required to have 4 of these. DCE 205 is a GN, and DCE 200 is a GL. There are a number of courses in Humanities and GHP that have this marker; some GSB courses do as well. You can also earn marker credit for language courses and Study-Abroad. (Check your undergraduate bulletin for all the details.)

Transfer students with enough credits get some of the Marker requirements waived. This will be noted on your degree evaluation.
