Study Abroad for Dance Majors

The Department encourages students to consider a semester of study abroad. The University has a number of study abroad programs which are exchanges, meaning that participating students pay only the normal tuition they would pay to UNCG, but go abroad that semester instead. (Room and board are sometimes included as well; participating students are also eligible for travel grants from UNCG.) This is a great bargain for in-state students. Out-of-state students may also want to check into study abroad programs that are offered by other institutions as well, although UNCG travel grants are not available for these external programs.

There are some UNCG exchange programs that offer rigorous dance training. Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts/Edith Cowan University and Theater Academy of Helsinki/Finland are conservatory programs. Students must be at the 300-400 level of BOTH ballet and contemporary to be considered. (In odd-numbered years, students must be at the 400 level to be considered for the Finland site.)

University of Cape Town (South Africa) offers a range of levels in African dance, ballet and a limited number of modern dance classes. Unitech (New Zealand) offers an exciting array of dance courses and is a new addition to our study abroad offerings. Other UNCG exchange programs offering good dance classes at a somewhat less rigorous level of training than students may find at UNCG are Manchester Metropolitan University (United Kingdom), the Scarborough campus of University of Hull (United Kingdom), Deakin University in Australia and the University of Ulster (Ireland). New programs may be added each year.

Still other UNCG exchange programs are ideal for BA students whose programs will allow them a semester without dance training. These may be especially appropriate for students with a second major.

Students who are interested in Study Abroad should start planning early, since it may be necessary to take some courses ahead of schedule in order to graduate on time. Robin Gee is our departmental Study Abroad Advisor and should be contacted directly if there is interest in any of our study abroad opportunities. Information sessions are held each semester in the International Programs Center. Students are encouraged to visit the Office of International Programs for further information about application deadlines.
