UNCG Chancellor Patricia Sullivan, center, meets Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation program officer Elizabeth Smith and Vice President P. Russell Hardin at the foundation's headquarters in Atlanta.
As the “Power of One, Impact of Many” Students First Campaign totals mount, the generosity of one organization continues to impact the lives of UNCG women year after year. Charles McTier, President, of the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation, recently informed UNCG Chancellor Patricia Sullivan of the Foundation’s intention to award UNCG $90,000 for 2006-2007. The Atlanta-based foundation supports the education of financially needy women in nine southeastern states. UNCG is one of several institutions in North Carolina receiving scholarship funding from the Foundation.
The Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation was first established by Conkey Pate Whitehead in 1946 as a memorial to his mother, Lettie Pate. Lettie Pate and her husband, Joseph Brown Whitehead were business, church, and civic leaders in Atlanta. Mr. Whitehead was the founder of the Atlanta Coca-Cola Bottling Company. Lettie Pate Whitehead dedicated her life to improving the lives of women through charity.
UNCG has been a grateful recipient of the Foundation’s generosity for many years. The first award was made to UNCG in 1964 with 10 students each receiving $150 awards. As the University enrollment has grown, the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation has responded accordingly. In 2005, the Foundation awarded funds to 50 UNCG students. The total amount the Foundation has given to the University since 1964 exceeds $1 million..
The number of UNCG students who have been assisted by Lettie Pate Whitehead is significant. Scholarship award recipient Shawnte Nicole Moore, an exercise and sports science major, states, “This scholarship gave me security in knowing that I can obtain my goals, not letting financial burdens block my path. I am a strong believer of the old saying, ‘If there is a will, there is a way’ except now I know there are people who want and are willing to help.”
