VF Intern Gets Award and Gains Real World Experience
An avid seamstress and designer, senior Michelle Sigmon was curious to see where her talent could take her after graduation. As a Consumer Apparel and Retail Studies major at UNCG, she won't have to wait to find out. Her 14-month internship working for VF Jeanswear's Wrangler department is providing her a vision for the future.
Through internship programs like VF's, students not only serve as a valuable resource for local businesses, but they also create a path for a successful career after graduation. “Through this internship, I am spending a year working for the world's largest apparel company doing exactly what I want to do when I graduate. It doesn't get better than that.”
Michelle was also one of two UNCG 2005 Young Menswear Association 2005 undergraduate scholarship award recipients. Michelle and Melissa Pritchard accompanied Internship Program Director Sherry Lyon to New York City to the YMA 2005 Awards Dinner in January. Guests included Jay Levitt, President and CEO of May Merchandising Co., Sean "P.Diddy" Combs, President and CEO of Sean John, and Richard Baker, CEO of Ocean Pacific Company. YMA displayed the students' design sketches and biographical information and both students were assigned an industry host to facilitate introductions, conversations and networking during the event. Award winners each received $5,000.
