Joseph M. Bryan Foundation Honored at Philanthropy Day

Bryan

The Foundation's greatest impact may be in education and economic development. Jim Melvin, the foundation's president, says improving education and expanding the region's economy go hand-in-hand. “There's nothing you can do better in economic development in Guilford County than having the best school system in the country,” Melvin said. “You can turn (students) on and get them a good quality education and a lot of other problems will go away.”

Among the Foundation's major donations this year is a $1 million gift to the UNCG Students First Campaign. These funds will support undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships for the Joseph M. Bryan School of Business and Economics, which was named in honor of Mr. Bryan in 1987. Over the past two decades, the Foundation has contributed some $8 million to the business school, including gifts to establish the Kathleen Price and Joseph M. Bryan Scholars and Fellows Program, the Joseph M. Bryan Distinguished Professorship and a $5 million gift in 1995 for an unrestricted endowment.
