Lecture Series Focuses on Political Reform

UNCG's Center for Legislative Studies and the Department of Political Science have kicked off their Fall 2007 lecture series, “Getting Back on Track? Reforms in American Politics.” Upcoming lectures include:

  • Dr. James Thurber of American University: “Promises Kept? Are Democrats Living Up To Their 2006 Promise To Clean Up Congress?” Wednesday, October 24, 7:30 p.m., Science Building, Room 201.
  • N. C. Speaker of the House Joe Hackney: “Legislators, Lobbyists And The Law: Ethics Reform In North Carolina,” Wednesday, November 7. 7:30 p.m., Weatherspoon Art Museum Auditorium.

UNCG Series Investigates the Presidency

Special Counsel, Advisor, and Speechwriter for President John F. Kennedy, Ted Sorensen, will headline the “Looking at the American Presidency” series which will offer speakers through October and November. Topics will range from the rise of Abraham Lincoln to White House communications. Sponsored by University Libraries, the Department of History and the Department of Political Science, the events are free and open to the public. The schedule includes:

  • Professor emeritus of history at NC State Dr. William C. Harris who will speak about the elections of 1860 and 1864. The event will take place Thursday, Oct. 4 at 7:00 p.m. in the Kirkland Room, Elliott University Center. Harris is the author of the book “Lincoln's Rise to the Presidency,” which will be available for sale and signing after the lecture.
  • Theodore Sorensen will speak on Monday, Oct. 29 at 7:00 p.m. in the Elliott University Center Auditorium. Sorenson was special counsel, adviser and speechwriter for Kennedy. Tickets to his lecture must be picked up in person from the UNCG Box Office, (336) 334-4849.
  • Dr. Martha Kumar, a political scientist at Towson University, will speak about her new book, “Managing the President's Message: The White House Communications Operation.” on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7:00 p.m. in Cone Ballroom B, Elliott University Center.

Networking Event Strengthens Corporate Connections

UNCG will host its annual Schmooza Palooza Student-Alumni networking event on Monday, October 22, 2007 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in the Elliot University Center Cone Ballroom. Sponsored by UNCG Career Services and UNCG Alumni Relations, the event allows students to meet alumni and practice their networking skills.

This year's event will feature Joshua Smith, President and CEO of the Coaching Group, and member of the Board of Directors of FedEx Corporation.

Registration for the event is required. Please register through SpartanCareers under the career events section.

Local Journalists to Discuss Role and Function of the Media

UNCG will to host an interactive panel discussion on news media ethics on Thursday, October 25, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., in the Moore Humanities and Research Administration Building, Room 2209.

The panel will discuss the role and function of the local media in an interactive format in which audience participation is encouraged. The panel will include:

  • Ed Cone, blogger and News & Record columnist
  • Jeanna Covington, Carolina Peacemaker
  • Tina Firesheets, News & Record
  • Dr. Spoma Jovanovic, UNCG Department of Communication Studies
  • Dr. David Holian, UNCG Department of Political Sciences
  • Erica Taylor, WFMY News 2

Close to Home Exhibit Relives the Modernism Experience in Greensboro

UNCG is taking the lead on an exhibition in November 2007 to showcase the impact of Edward Loewenstein and Modernsim on the city of Greensboro in the mid-twentieth century. The public is invited to a series of free events related to the Close to Home exhibit including:

  • The opening on November 8 at the UNCG Gatewood Gallery, 7:00 p.m.
  • A tour on November 10 of the Elon University School of Law, 10:00 a.m.
  • A movie on November 10, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House, Weatherspoon Art Museum, 2:00 p.m.
  • An afternoon of fun and furnishings on November 11, Gatewood Building, 1:00 p.m.
