Sustainability Film Series, Through April 10

The UNCG Committee on Sustainability will continue its film series with four feature films designed to stimulate discussion about a sustainable future for the planet. All showings will be held at the Weatherspoon Art Gallery at 6:30 p.m.

  • January 24: Freedom Fuels. An in-depth look at renewable fuel sources, such as bio-diesel, ethanol and vegetable oil. It explores the interaction of the oil industry and alternative fuels over the last 150 years and examines the global impact of bio-fuels.
  • February 21: The Power of Community. The story of how the Cuban people survived when they lost access to Soviet oil in the early 1990's.
  • March 13: Manufactured Landscapes. Photographer Edward Burtynsky's journey to China to document the country's industrial revolution.
  • April 10: Wild Caught. UNCG professor Matt Barr's documentary about the challenges of a North Carolina fishing community.

Shades of Color Conference, February 2

The Office of Multicultural Affairs will host the Shades of Color Conference on Saturday, February 2, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Elliott University Center. The theme of the conference is “The Politics of Perception: Race, Gender, and Cultural Identity”; it is held in conjunction with the Conference on African-American Experience and Culture. The conference will feature speakers Rosa Alicia Clemente and Mark Anthony Neal as well as workshops and presentations.

BB&T Distinguished Lecture Series, February 11

John A. Allison IV will give the inaugural lecture in the BB&T Distinguished Lecture Series on Capitalism, Monday, February 11 at 4 p.m. in Room 160 of the Bryan Building. Allison is chairman and CEO of BB&T Corporation. Allison will discuss leadership and values.

BB&T recently gave UNCG a $1 million gift to fund the BB&T Program on Capitalism, Markets and Morality. The program was established to promote the study, discussion and debate about the role of capitalism and its moral implications, and offers students the opportunity to examine the ethical and philosophical basis for free market economies.

University Concert & Lecture Series, February 13 and May 1

The University Concert & Lecture Series will feature two performances during the spring semester. The series is sponsored by Campus Activities & Programs to help give UNCG students and the community access to the diverse culture and arts of the world.

Grammy-nominated musician Chris Botti will perform on Wednesday February 13. Botti is an acclaimed trumpeter and composer and has worked with such musicians as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sting, Andrea Bocelli and others. On May 1, the St. Petersburg Ballet will perform “Romeo & Juliet,” directed by Yuri Petukhov and featuring Sergei Prokofiev's well-known score.

Both performances will take place at the Carolina Theatre, 310 South Greene Street in downtown Greensboro, and will start promptly at 7:00 p.m. Tickets may be purchased from the UNCG Box Office online, by phone at 336 334-4849 or at the Carolina Theatre Box Office. UNCG Job Fair, Career Expo

The UNCG Career Services Center will hold a Part-Time and Summer Job Fair for students Monday, February 25, 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Elliott University Center's Cone Ballroom. The Center will also hold a Spring Career Expo for students seeking internships and full-time jobs, Wednesday, March 26, 12:30 to 4:00 p.m., in Cone Ballroom.

Both events are great opportunities to connect with students and recruit new talent. North Carolina Entrepreneurship Summit, February 26

The UNCG Joseph M. Bryan School of Business and Economics is a sponsor of the 2008 N.C. Entrepreneurship Summit, which will be held at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center on Tuesday February 26. This year marks the first time the event has been held outside the Triangle area. Nido Qubein, president of High Point University, will be the keynote speaker. The summit will feature updates on 2007 summit initiatives such as entrepreneurship education as well as an entrepreneurship showcase of the Piedmont Triad region, among other events. The theme of the summit, “Doorways to Entrepreneurial Communities,” is designed to celebrate and cultivate entrepreneurship across North Carolina.

Symposium in Philosophy, February 29 - March 2

The UNCG Department of Philosophy will host the 2008 UNCG Symposium in Philosophy, Friday February 29 through Sunday March 2 in the Dogwood Room of the Elliott University Center. Registration for UNCG faculty, staff, and students is free; for all others it is $30. The theme of the event will be “Ethical Perspectives on Risk,” with such topics as “Rationality and Risk Aversion” and “Criminalization and Risk.” A full schedule of events is available at http://www.uncg.edu/phi/2008symp.html.

Looking at the American Presidency, March 3

The UNCG Libraries will continue the “Looking at the American Presidency” series with Dr. Vernon Burton, Professor of History and Sociology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Burton will speak on Monday March 3 at 4 p.m. in the Alexander Room of the Elliott University Center. Burton is known for his new book, The Age of Lincoln, which covers the United States during the Civil War and Reconstruction. The event is free and open to the public.

One Guilford Leadership Symposium, March 12

UNCG will host “One Guilford: A Leadership Symposium,” sponsored by the News & Record, on Wednesday March 12. It will be the third in the newspaper's series of community leadership symposiums.

The topic will be education. Issues to be discussed include how well Guilford County prepares high school students for college or employment; how higher education and the business community can work together to improve student readiness, and how we can guarantee students are developing necessary skills in critical thinking and problem solving.

The symposium will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., in the Elliott University Center Auditorium. It is free and open to the public. Parking will be available in the Walker Avenue parking deck.

Design, Art, and Technology Symposium, March 27 - 29

UNCG has been selected to host the 2008 Design, Art, and Technology Symposium. Titled, “Between the Lines: Innovation in Art, Architecture and Design,” the event will take place from March 27-29 on the UNCG campus. The symposium will feature a Design and Technology Expo, gallery exhibitions, and presentations from many speakers including Mackey McDonald, Chairman of VF Corp., and Mick Ebeling of The Ebeling Group, a Los Angeles-based film production company. Friends of the UNCG Libraries Dinner, April 16

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Gene Roberts will be the speaker for the Friends of the UNCG Libraries annual dinner on Wednesday, April 16. The event will be held in Cone Ballroom in the Elliott University Center. Roberts co-authored The Race Beat: The Press, The Civil Rights Struggle, and The Awakening of a Nation, which received the 2007 Pulitzer for history.

The event will begin with a reception at 6 p.m.; the program will start at 8 p.m. Tickets are available from the University Box Office in the Elliott University Center, 336 334-4849 (noon to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday).
