Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Educational Leadership and Cultural Foundations (ELC) is to prepare thoughtful and effective leaders in education through programs of study that are interdisciplinary in focus. Faculty members have expertise in areas of educational leadership and cultural foundations. Concurrently, faculty members provide leadership to the University, community, state of North Carolina, and nation in their disciplines through teaching, research, and service. The Master of School Administration (MSA) degree; Educational Specialist in Educational Leadership (Ed.S.), Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership (Ed.D.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Educational Studies with a Concentration in Cultural Studies emphasize the cultural context of education and a reconstructive vision for excellent and equitable schooling. Areas of curricular focus explore issues of social justice that range from educational theory and practice to cultural analysis, educational leadership and school organization, educational policy, and curriculum studies. The mission of the ELC Department is consistent with social justice theory and practice, and the School of Education and University.
