The
Department of English offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts, the Master
of Arts, and the Doctor of Philosophy in English, and the Master of Fine Arts
in Creative Writing. It also offers two programs in cooperation with the School
of Education leading to teacher licensure, the Bachelor of Arts -- High School
Teaching (A licensure) and the Master of Education with two options (A or M
licensure).
Through these mutually supportive programs the department emphasizes the centrality
of English Studies to the liberal arts and offers unique opportunities to enrich
students through the study of literature and language. Department faculty share
the conviction that the study of English exercises the imagination and teaches
the value of individual perception, the importance of culture, and the power
of ideas. The faculty also believe that English Studies provides a foundation
for lifelong learning and prepares majors for a variety of careers.
