Welcome to the Composition Program at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  Our program is based on the pragmatic principles of action and belief. "A belief," says William James, "is something upon which we are prepared to act." As teachers of writing, we believe that all students can become good writers, and we provide classroom contexts to act on that belief.

Our program is informed by liberatory pedagogy, feminist theory, social constructionist principles and ethnographic perspectives. In the true pragmatic sense, it draws on the ideas that best serve students' learning and development as thinkers, readers and writers. "Education," says Paulo Freire, "is an act of love and thus an act of courage." Teaching writing involves both bravery and caring.

This site has information on our esteemed graduate faculty and teaching assistants, and composition program events.  In addition, composition instructors will find helpful resources, such as sample syllabi and professional organization and journals.  We've also linked crucial related sites, such as UNCG's Speaking and Writing Across the Curriculum site and our Writing Center.
