The All Freshman Read selection for the 2009-2010 academic year is Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario.

The “All Freshman Read” provides a common text for English 101 students and participating English 101 instructors. This text serves as the basis for an undergraduate conference, arranged by the composition program, in which students across English 101 classes share ideas and learn to develop their skills in written and oral rhetoric for multiple audiences. These students also have the opportunity to experience the consequences of their reading and writing outside of the classroom by participating in the annual “One Book, Many Voices” conference and attending other campus events coordinated around the All Freshmen Read book. The “One Book, Many Voices” Undergraduate Conference is scheduled for Friday, November 13th, 2009, from 9am to 2pm.

In addition, the author of the All Freshmen Read book typically speaks at UNCG during the fall semester. This year, Sonia Nazario is scheduled to speak on Monday, October 26, 2009. Ms. Nazario is a reporter for the Los Angeles Times and won the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing in 2003.

Books selected in the past include A Long Way Gone, Ellen Foster, Big Fish, Snow Falling on Cedars, The Color of Water, Oral History and Brighten the Corner Where You Are.
