Portfolios


Composition instructors meet at the end of each semester to assess writing portfolios and discuss ways of improving them. Based on National Writing Program Administration Guidelines, we have agreed that UNCG English 101 portfolios should include evidence for the following:

Rhetorical Knowledge
  • Discusses a paper or project connected to rhetoric
  • Illustrates changes in language use within her own texts
Critical Thinking
  • Attempts to synthesize information rather than report or summarize it
  • Understands the importance of providing evidence for ideas
Writing/Language Processes
  • Illustrates revision through including and commenting on multiple drafts
  • Discusses overall improvement in writing strengths and weaknesses
  • Displays an overall range of writing in different genres
Knowledge of Conventions
  • Organizes portfolio effectively for a reader
  • Shows an understanding of the purpose of the opening statement/reflective letter
  • Understands how surface features affect a reader’s response
  • Knows how to recognize and use the academic skills of summary, paraphrase and direct quotation
  • Understands the University’s plagiarism policy and consequences of non-compliance
