Expectations
This course is speaking intensive; therefore, class participation and preparation are crucial to your sucess in this course. You will be required to complete a wide variety of readings during the semester, and will also be required to participate on three seperate panels . Only those who complete all the required course work will receive a passing grade.
You should expect me to be prepared for each class. I will get back assignments in a timely fashion and make myself available during office hours and other hours as needed.
Course Objectives
At the completion of this course, you will be able to:
-Interpret and evaluate argumentative discourse, including writing and speech
-Construct cogent arguments
-Locate, synthesize, and evaluate relevant information
-Demonstrate an understanding of the aims and methods of intellectual discourse
-Weigh evidence and evaluate the arguments of differing viewpoints
-Have the ability to apply these skills, knowledge, and/or attitudes to a significant range of discourses

Mid-term 15%
Final Paper 25%
Participation 10% *this is not a give-away grade; you must earn this
Attendance and Assignment Policy
This course will be very discussion and group work oriented, and regaular attendance and class participation are crucial to your success in this course. After 3 absences of any kind, you grade will be dropped a third of agrade for each absence. I do not distinguish between excused and unexcused absences.
Assignments will be handed in on time or they will not be accepted unless prior arrangements have been made with me. Please see me if you anticipate missing a deadline.
*Plagiarism will not be tolerated.
*All written work must be typed or computor print-out.
*Appropriate spelling, punctuation, and grammar is expected on all work turned in.

The Writing Center
This is a resource open to all students at the university for getting feedback on drafts in progress. The writing center is located at 101 McIver. Hours: M-R 9am-8pm, F 9am-3pm
