Writing Matters

The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman - Ernest Gaines

Expectations

Although we will be reading quite a bit of text, the bulk of the class work will center around your writing. You will be writing for the rest of your college career so use

this class as a place to get comfortable with writing. I expect you to keep up with assignments and come prepared for each class period. Only those who complete

all the required course work will receive a passing grade.

I will get back assignments in a timely fashion and make myself available during office hours and other hours as needed.

Course Objectives:

At the completion of this course, you will be able to:

-Interpret and evaluate argumentative discourse, including writing and speech

-Construct cogent arguments

-Communicate those arguments clearly, coherently and effectively

-Locate, synthesize, and evaluate relevant information

-Demonstrate an understanding of the aims and methods of intellectual discourse

-Weigh evidence and evaluate the arguments of differing viewpoints

 Attendance and Assignment Policy

This course will be very activity and group work oriented and regular attendance and class participation are crucial to your success in this course. After 3 absences of any kind, your grade will be dropped a third of a grade for each absence thereafter. I do not distinguish between excused and unexcused absences.

*Assignments will be handed in on time or they will not be accepted unless prior arrangements have been made with me.  Please see me if you anticipate missing a deadline.

*Plagiarism will not be tolerated.

*Appropriate spelling, punctuation, and grammar is expected on all work turned in.
