Objectives
In this course, you will develop your writing skills through close reading, daily free-writing exercises, writing of formal essays and participation in class workshops and peer critiques. This course should help you feel more comfortable with putting your thoughts on paper and revising your essays so that you can grab your readers’ interest and get your point across effectively.

Notebook for daily free-write exercises
Three-ring binder for portfolios

Grading
Class participation and Journals: This includes participation in workshops, completion of weekly reading assignments, all journal assignments and participation in class discussions: 25%
Free-write Notebook: You will keep a notebook of your in-class writing exercises that will be submitted at the end of the semester along with your portfolio: 10%
Three Essays and essay drafts: Essays on topics given throughout the semester: 25%
Portfolio: This will consist of polished versions of your three final essays, polished versions of four journal assignments, one polished free-write and your free-write notebook: 35%
Class Presentation: Presentation of a selection from your portfolio: 5%

Other Important Information
Attendance is mandatory: Unexcused absences will result in a
reduction of your grade.
Late Papers: Will not be accepted. Do not submit written assignments via e-mail.
Be on time: If you are late more than twice this will be regarded as the equivalent of one unexcused absence.
Plagiarism: Anyone found to plagiarize a written assignment will be failed for the entire course.

All essays must be typed, double-spaced and stapled.
