Welcome to English 102! This course will provide you with reading, writing, speaking, and revising skills. To achieve these goals, we will discuss various novels and movies and apply their relationships and representations to our society and culture. In addition, you will improve your oral communication techniques through an individual presentation, character panel, creative presentation, and magazine project. At the end of this course, you will be able to speak clearly, coherently, and effectively in front of a group, and you will be able to adopt your communication skills to your audience. Furthermore, you will create and evaluate arguments as well as learn rhetorical skills.
Texts:
Stokers—Dracula
William Goldman—The Princess Bride
Shakespeare—The Taming of the Shrew
Course Requirements:
Participation (Reading and Writing assignments and Workshops):
This is a speaking intensive as well as a writing course. You should make every
effort to make your voice heard through your daily participation in class
and through your daily assignments. You will not be able to discuss effectively
the assignments, novels, and movies if you do not read the material. In addition,
you should expect periodic reading quizzes.
Presentations (Individual Informative Presentation, Character Panel, Creative
Presentation, and Magazine):
Since this is a speaking intensive course, you will participate in several
types of presentations. The informative presentations will be done on your
own and will happen periodically throughout the semester. The Character Panel
goes along with Dracula and The Taming of the Shrew. In addition, you will
do a creative group presentation and a magazine presentation. Specifics for
each requirement will be handed out later in the course.
Communication Notebook:
Throughout the semester you will be required to do five Communication Notebook
assignments. I will give you a prompt, and you will complete the assignment.
Since each of these 2 page writing assignments is a building block for your
magazine, you must adequately complete all five assignments in order to prepare
the magazine project. A handout will be given with details about these five
writing assignments.
Group Magazine Project:
We will periodically work on this throughout the semester. Your Communication
Notebook assignments along with our daily activities will lead up to this
final project. A handout will be given later in the semester.
Attendance:
Daily participation and attendance are requirements for this course. Discussions
and activities that are missed cannot be made up. Since attendance is crucial,
you are allowed three absences before action will be taken. On your fourth
absence, your grade will be reduced by a third of a letter grade and so on.
After six absences, you will fail the course. In addition, being late to class
is rude and disrespectful to your fellow students. Two late entries, ten minutes
or more, count as one absence. If you miss class, it is your responsibility
to email me or a classmate about missed activities. In addition, you should
come prepared to the class that follows your absence.
