Spring 2002

A Changing Perspective

The assignment is to tell the story of how your perspective on an idea or experience changed over time.  To do this, break your experience into sections that represent important periods in your life that contributed to your change in perspective. Explore the influence of each of these sections as you use these sections as a framework to organize the telling of your story.  This assignment will take the form of an eight to ten minute presentation, so you will need to use storytelling techniques to keep your audience engaged as you clearly communicate the factors that led to your change in perspective.

Getting Started:

Begin this assignment by making a list of possible topics.  For each topic list the factors that led to your change of mind and identify the period of time over which you were influenced by these factors. If any of your lists reveal perspective shifts that happened instantly or over a brief period of time, cross them off of your list of possibilities. Chose a topic from your list that will give you the opportunity to discuss how your change in perspective was influenced by a complex and interesting set of factors that occurred over a significant period of time.

As you develop and organize your ideas write an in-depth outline for your presentation. I will collect this outline after you give your presentation.  When you complete writing this outline you might choose to write a less detailed outline or an outline on note cards that you can use as a guide when you give your presentation.  While this second outline is optional, you may find that it is an excellent help to your presentation.  Also, consider how handouts and visuals can add to the clarity and interest of a presentation.
