Dorothy Richardson: A Calendar of Letters
by George H. Thomson
Professor Thomson makes another lasting contribution to
Richardson scholarship in Dorothy Richardson: A Calendar of Letters. This
new e-book documents more than 2000 letters and cards sent by Richardson to
friends, acquaintances, publishers, and readers. A further 170 letters sent to
the author by others and over 60 third-party letters relating to her life and
work are also included. Each entry gives the date and place of writing, quotes
the opening words of the communication, briefly summarizes its content, and
includes a description of the letter or card, with its location and details of
publication when appropriate. The arrangement is chronological.
A Calendar of Letters attests to Thomson’s travels and his diligent
research into some twenty-nine libraries and archives, from the Beinecke Library
to the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center and from the Berg Collection in
New York to the Manuscript Division of the British Library. Letters from five private collections are also recorded.
Gloria Fromm in Dorothy Richardson: A Biography (1977) established a
solid foundation for Richardson studies and then built handsomely upon that
foundation with Windows on Modernism: Selected Letters of Dorothy Richardson
(1995). During the past decade Professor Thomson has advanced the work initiated
by Fromm. Scholars and general readers alike have already benefited from his
books: A Reader's
Guide to Dorothy Richardson's “Pilgrimage” (1996),
Notes on
"Pilgrimage": Dorothy Richardson Annotated (1999), and
The Editions of Dorothy Richardson's
“Pilgrimage”: A Comparison of Texts (2001).
Dorothy Richardson: A Calendar of Letters will be a welcomed addition.
