Classroom Practice Track (39 hours)


This option is designed for students who do not have North Carolina licensure for secondary teaching in English.  It requires 39 hours of course work including a directed research project.  There is no foreign language or thesis requirement.  Prerequisite is a B.A. degree in English from a certified college or equivalent course work.  Students may also have to complete additional prerequisites normally completed during an "A" licensure program.  These may include HEA 201: Personal Health and PSY 121: General Psychology, if equivalent courses were not in a student's undergraduate program.  North Carolina requires demonstration of instructional technology skills.  LIS 120: Introduction to Instructional Technology for Educational Settings may be recommended.  In addition, for "A" licensure, North Carolina requires passing scores for the Praxis II exams.

B. Pedagogical Expertise (21 hours)

CUI 551 - Teaching Practices and Curriculum in English (3)

ENG 513 - History of the English Language (3)

or ENG 660 - Modern Language Theory (3)

ENG 522 - Teaching Composition: Theory and Applications (3)

3 courses in literature (9)

Electives (3)
Students who have not taken a course in literary theory are strongly advised to take ENG 601.

C. Professional Development/Leadership (9 hours):

CUI 638 - Seminar in Secondary Education (3)

CUI 680 - Clinical Experience in Teaching (6)
