Advising Appointments:

All advisors should post a sign-up sheet for appointments during the advising period on their doors and let the office staff know if they will be out of town during that time or unable to keep a scheduled appointment. Students are responsible for scheduling their appointments.

Codes:

All undergraduates are required to meet each semester with their faculty advisors for assistance with course selection and to obtain semester advising codes. The Director of Undergraduate Studies provides advisors with the names and advising codes for the students assigned to them. If you have any questions about codes, please contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Dr. James Evans at james_evans@uncg.edu, 334-3282.. The administrative staff does not have access to students’ advising codes and cannot give these out to students.

MA Committees:

Chair Responsibilities: The chair is primarily responsible for directing the student in his or her thesis. The chair sets up various meetings between the student and the committee and supervises the process of final thesis revisions.

Member Responsibilities: The committee members meet with the student to discuss the thesis. The members offer suggestions for revisions. The chair and each member must sign off on the final version of the student's thesis before publication. For more information about the graduate program, see Alyson Frazier at awfrazie@uncg.edu, 13137 MHRA, 4-5311. See graduate program learning goals.

PhD Committees:

Chair Responsibilities: The chair is primarily responsible for directing the student in his or her preliminary examination, dissertation, and defense. The chair sets up various meetings between the student and the committee, manages the administration of the exam, and supervises the dissertation.

Member Responsibilities: The committee members meet with the student to discuss preparation for the preliminary examination and write the questions for their own area of expertise. After the preliminary exam, one of the four members of the committee can be excused; the other three, depending on their expertise and the wishes of the director, may be more or less involved in working with the student while the dissertation is being written. They read the completed dissertation, participate in the defense, and sign the dissertation. For more information about the graduate program, see Alyson Frazier at awfrazie@uncg.edu, 3137 HHRA, 4-5311. See graduate program learning goals.

Undergraduate Advising:

Undergraduate advising affords students the opportunity to speak with a faculty member about their courses in order to ensure that they are making wise selections and will complete the requirements for graduation in a timely fashion. Students may also discuss career plans with the advisor. Undergraduate advisors should be familiar with both the General Education Core (GEC) requirements and the major requirements of the department; both are available in the Undergraduate Bulletin.
