Scholar Assistant Assignment

As you will see in the description of "Research Assistantships" on our website, RAs will now have assignments in four possible categories, including "Scholar Assistant."  Please read the whole "Research Assistantships" description carefully, but for your convenience here are excerpts from the most pertinent sections.

Scholar Assistant
Some students are assigned to assist professors in their scholarly research.  Their duties may include bibliographical research, preparing briefs of articles and books, proofreading, collecting materials from the library, and various clerical tasks.   . . .

At the beginning of each semester, the professor and the Scholar Assistant should draw up a formal statement of mutual expectations, including a brief description of the professor's research project and the student's anticipated responsibilities.  The professor serves as supervisor for that portion of the student's workload and will sign off on the student's worklog.

Worklogs

. . . All students who have been awarded an RA must keep worklogs that record hours spent in each of their assignments during each month of their employment, signing each worklog to verify that they have prepared it themselves (log template available on line).  Since there are ordinarily at least two supervisors, a separate worklog should be kept for each assignment, with each supervisor signing off on the appropriate worklog.

Worklogs are due at the end of the month, and should be turned in to the staffer in reception no later than the 5th of the following month. . . .

Please note your particular responsibilities as the supervising professor:
> to draw up a formal statement of mutual expectations, as described above.
> to sign off on the RA's worklog each month, verifying that the RA has worked the hours recorded.
> to monitor the recorded work hours, being sure that hours worked per week average out to the RA's total assignment with you.
> to consult with the supervisors when necessary to adjust the RA's workload to match changing needs of all assignments.

Please tell Jim Clark immediately if:  the RA fails to work sufficient average hours; the RA fails to keep accurate worklogs or to give them to you for signature; the RA's work is unacceptably poor.
