The breadth of graduate offerings allows us to provide innovative opportunities within
a traditional framework of literary study. Students in the PhD program, for example, can
specialize or minor in Rhetoric and Composition, which may include
substantial work in literary theory and in pedagogy.
The variety of our programs has enabled the department to assemble a distinguished faculty
who are characterized by their broad interests in criticism, the study of language and culture,
and writing. Our faculty has a strong commitment to teaching and values its long tradition of collegiality.
The size of the programs allows students to work closely with their faculty advisory committees
to develop courses of study reflecting their particular interests. We currently have about 150
students enrolled in the four programs. The 600-level class size is limited to 15 students,
though some classes are smaller.
While students may choose to work in any area of literature and language, a
few particular strengths may be singled out: the program in rhetoric and composition,
American literatures and culture, British literature and cultures and creative
writing. Students in rhetoric and composition, literature, and creative writing
bring diverse, mutually enriching interests to the classrooms, and all profit
from the extracurricular offerings of the different programs. In addition, these
areas of study and the program as a whole are strengthened by close ties to
other departments in the university.
When you join one of our programs, we make a commitment to do our best so that you will succeed.
We work with you all along the way.
