This option is designed for students who do not have North Carolina licensure for secondary teaching in English. It requires 39 hours of work including a directed research project. There is no foreign language or thesis requirement. Prerequisite is a B.A. degree in English from a certified college or equivalent course work. Students may also have to fulfill additional prerequisites normally completed during a Standard Professional I licensure program.

Pedagogical Expertise /21 hours

3 courses in literature (9 hours)

English 522: Teaching Composition (3 hours)
English 660: Modern Language Theory OR English 513: History of the English Language (3 hours)
CUI 551: Methods of Teaching Secondary English (3 hours)

Electives / 3 hours

Students who have not taken a course in literary theory are strongly advised to take English 701. Students completing this track must also compile a Teaching and Technology Portfolio.

Professional Development/Leadership / 9 hours

CUI 680b: Clinical Experience in Teaching Seminar (3 hours)
CUI 680a: Clinical Experience in Teaching (6 hours)
