PhD: Teaching Assistantships, Scholarships & Fellowships

Teaching Assistantships:

Students with an MA admitted to the PhD program may receive a teaching assistantship. The teaching assignment is three courses per year, but in the first year tutoring duties in the writing center substitute for one course.

In the first year, the stipend is $13,500 plus an in-state tuition waver for the two-semester academic year. All new teaching assistants are required to take English 747: Theories and Practices in the Teaching of College English, their first semester. A limited number of tuition waivers are available for out-of-state students. In years two through four, the stipend increases to $16,500 (but no in-state waiver). Fellowships and Scholarships:

Below you will see a listing of the fellowships and scholarships from the Graduate School and the department. Exceptional applicants may be nominated for these by the Director of Graduate Study on the recommendation of the department's Graduate Studies Committee. We compete for Graduate School scholarships with other departments. Winning a Hayes, for example, would allow you to take 12 hours in the fall and 12 hours in the spring semesters. In your second through fourth years you would have a teaching assistantship. If you win a Greensboro Graduate Scholarship, you would also be a teaching assistant.

Graduate School Fellowships & Scholarships

Alumni / Excellence / Hayes Fellowship:

$20,000 stipend and health insurance. Tuition waiver(s) will be provided if possible. Non-renewable.

Awarded to a first year doctoral student; nominated by department and selected by Graduate School.

Greensboro Graduate:

$3,000 award for three years added to teaching assistantship stipend. Out-of-state tuition waivers will be provided; automatic renewal.

Awarded to outstanding new doctoral students recommended for a teaching assistantship; nominated by department and selected by Graduate School.

Weil Fellowship:

$7,000 award. Tuition waiver(s) will be provided if possible.

Awarded to first year doctoral students who are UNCG alumni.

UNC Campus Minority Presence Fellowship:

$4,000 - $8,000 award.  Tuition waiver will be provided if possible. Renewable for up to three years with the submission of a new FAFSA.

Awarded to an African-American resident of North Carolina, currently a full-time doctoral student; based on need; nominated by department and selected by Graduate School.

Lyon Fellowship

$4,000 award. Tuition waiver(s) will be provided if possible.

Awarded to any newly admitted or continuing doctoral student; based on merit; nominated by department and selected by Graduate School.

Department Fellowships & Scholarships

Lane Fellowship:

Preference given to student with interest in nineteenth-century British literature. U.S. citizen.

Amy Charles Scholarship:

Preference given to student with interest in early British literature.
