You will improve and refine your argumentative, analytical, and critical thinking skills as we discuss pivotal issues presented in the series: varies aspects of gender, sexuality, race, and the evolutions of television as a medium as well as evolutions of acceptable content within that medium. As a requirement of the course, you will be expected to watch each weekly episode (Tuesday nights at 10pm on the FX Network) as well as post multiple weekly Discussion Board responses. You will also be expected to write in a variety of modes: character analysis, comparison, argument, and reaction/response. There is no required text for this course; readings will be in the form of e-reserves. Final grading will consist of written assignments and participation as well as extensive in-class and on-line participation. Because of the nature of this course, familiarity with the series is required (series DVDs can be rented from various video rental locations). Important Note: nip/tuck has been rated TV MA: V, S, L for mature content including graphic violence, explicit sexual activity, and crude/indecent language. Required Texts and Materials: Access to nip/tuck weekly airings (FX Network on Tuesday nights) Previous Seasons on Reserve in Jackson Library and available to check out at the Teaching and Learning Center E-Reserves Learning Goals: At the completion of this course, the student will be able to: Interpret and evaluate argumentative discourse, including writing and speech Construct cogent arguments Communicate those arguments clearly, coherently and effectively Locate, synthesize, and evaluate relevant information Demonstrate an understanding of the aims and methods of intellectual discourse Weigh evidence and evaluate the arguments of differing viewpoints Classroom Policies: Eating, sleeping, or reading non-class materials during class is not acceptable. Neither is thoughtless behavior (to the instructor or your classmates), arriving late, plagiarizing, or turning in work after the deadline. Cell phones should not be heard or seen. As stated before, this course will be dealing with very sensitive issues that must be respected and addressed in an appropriate fashion. While the language used in class and on video may be offensive or inappropriate, that does not make it acceptable to mimic those behaviors. I expect that all of my students exhibit tolerance and fairness when discussing any controversial topic, even if they do not agree with the subject/topic. Any type of intolerance (verbal, written, behavioral) will result in a conference and removal (possibly permanent) from the classroom community. Contacting me: The best way to contact me is through email. I check my email ONCE a day during my office hours. Please do not email me and expect an immediate response; I cannot guarantee that. If you cannot email me, you can leave a voice mail on my office phone or a note in my mailbox (located in the English Department in HHRA), but I do not check those every day. Grading: Portfolio: 40% Short Papers (reviews and character analyses): 20% Long Papers (comparison and position): 20% Writers Notebook (and discussion board): 10% Participation: 10% I will evaluate all your work and share my insights with you. During conference meetings, youll have an opportunity to evaluate your own progress in the course. Of course, you may talk with me at any time about your work in the classdont feel that you have to wait until a scheduled conference. Use my office hours!! I am there to help you!!! Your final grade will be based on your meeting of all the course requirements, your participation in class, and your portfolio of polished writing. However I will not accept late assignments. To be considered on time, papers and assignments must be turned in at the beginning of class or by the deadline listed.. If you arrive tardy and hand the paper in at the end of class, it is late and therefore unacceptable. Blackboard: You are expected to log onto Blackboard at least twice a week. Weekly notebook entries must be submitted through Blackboard by noon on Wednesday. There will also be important announcements and assignments on the site. While logged onto Blackboard, you will participate in the online discussions and activities. Failure to do so will result in a severe grade penalty. You are also expected to use your UNCG email account and check it regularly for classroom business. Attendance: You are expected to come to class every class meeting and to your scheduled conferences. You are allowed two classroom absences. Use these absences for situations that are out of your control, not for times when you feel like sleeping in or leaving town early. Your grade will drop a full letter grade on your third absence. After your fourth absence, you will fail the course. Conferences and draft workshops are mandatory, and missing one is the same as missing a class. Your grade will suffer as a result. I reserve the right to penalize you up to two unexcused absences for a missed conference or workshop. NOTE: To be counted present in class, you must be on time and PREPARED. Being PREPARED for this course means that all work (reading, writing, viewing) must be completed prior to entering the classroom. I will announce daily viewing expectations during each class session. Failure to view the assigned episodes and segments will result in a severe grade reduction and possible drop from the course. Plagiarism: DO NOT PLAGARIZE. YOU WILL FAIL THIS COURSE. For more information on plagiarism, consult the section on Academic Integrity in your calendar handbook, beginning on page 185. Pay close attention to page 186. The Writing Center: This free resource is open to all university students. At the Center, you may make an appointment or just drop in to have a one-on-one conference with a writing consultant. The Writing Center staff can assist you with any stage of the writing process, from getting started and brainstorming possible topics to revising a final paper. The informal, friendly style of the Center may surprise you. Please take advantage of this unique resource. Its located in the HHRA and is open M-Th 9-8 and F 9-3. Course Schedule Because of the nature of this course, much of this schedule is To Be Announced. I will announce topics, assignments, and their respective due dates each class session. Course Assignments Weekly Notebook Entries: Each week, you are expected to complete a 1-2 page notebook response. Unless otherwise assigned, these responses will be reaction/responses to each weeks episode. They are due in the Digital Drop box (or, as a VERY LAST RESORT, in my email as a Word attachment) by NOON each WEDNESDAY. Review #1: You will write a 3-4 page review of Season 1 of nip/tuck. You are expected to summarize the season in entirety (without giving away surprises!) as well as make an informed value assessment of the season. NO OUTSIDE SOURCES. Review #2: You will write a 3-4 page review of Season 2 of nip/tuck. You are expected to summarize the season in entirety (without giving away surprises!) as well as make an informed value assessment of the season. NO OUTSIDE SOURCES. Review #3: You will write a 3-4 page review of Season 3 of nip/tuck. You are expected to summarize the season in entirety (without giving away surprises!) as well as make an informed value assessment of the season. NO OUTSIDE SOURCES. Character Analysis #1 and #2: You will write two 4-5 page analyses of a major character in any season on nip/tuck. Each paper must address a DIFFERENT character! You may choose from any character that appears in three or more episodes; Secondary characters will not work. Your papers must complete the following tasks: 1.) description of the character, 2.) discussion of typical behaviors, highlighting one or two in detail, 3.) motives for behaviors, and 4.) character growth and digressions. NO OUTSIDE SOURCES. Comparison Paper: This is a 5-7 page paper comparing two (or more) subjects in the topic of your choosing. Your paper should address topics somehow related to our course discussions, reading, and themes. Feel free to compare characters, episodes, seasons, or storylines. You may even choose to compare nip/tuck to other medical dramas of your choosing. Topics need to be cleared with me at least two weeks prior to the due date (10/19/06). OUTSIDE SOURCES MAY BE USED. Position Paper: This is a 7-9 page paper that examines any of the topics that we have discussed this semester and states your EDUCATED position on that topic. I expect you to conduct thorough research and present your topic in a well-informed and appropriate fashion. While you do not need to go into extreme detail on both sides of the argument, your paper should reveal that you are well-versed in the oppositions argument. Topics can range from: Female Genital Mutilation, cosmetic surgery, transgenderism, gender stereotypes, parenting . Be sure that your topic is ARGUEABLE. Do not pick something that EVERYONE supports or you will not have a position paper. OUTSIDE SOURCES REQUIRED. Portfolio: This final assignment will be comprised of 20 pages of POLISHED writing. You will use all writing assignments completed this semester to create this piece. I will provide more specific details further into the semester. GENERAL ASSIGNMENT EXPECTATIONS All assignments turned in during this course must meet the following expectations: MLA Format 12 point, Times New Roman font 1 margins (this is a setting that you will have to change on your PC) Double spaced Grammatically correct with NO spelling/editing errors Labeled with your name, date, course section, assignment, and TITLE Papers that do not meet these expectations will not be accepted. All correspondence with me including emails must be grammatically correct with no spelling/editing errors.
