Face to Face
With a focus on feedback rather than correction, face-to-face consulting is the classic Writing Center method of working. You come to our office (3211 MHRA) and work one-on-one with a consultant. Face-to-face consulting is appropriate for all sorts of writing. No appointment is required. For more information call us at 336.334.3125 or send us a message using the chat box to the left.

Online Consultation
Focusing on feedback rather than correction, the Online Writing Center (OWC) is great for working on things like brainstorming, organization, paragraph structure, introductions and conclusions, and transitions. Since your document gets reformatted, this method is not effective for questions about formatting or layout. Also, it's good to remember that even though we expect most things we do online to go fast, writing center sessions are designed to go slowly. This allows us to spend time with you as a writer. We won't be able to go through your paper line by line, focusing only on grammar error. Instead, it's more productive to focus on larger issues like organization or thesis development.
Plan on about 5 minutes to set up your session and up to an hour to work on your paper. We can cover approximately 5 pages during a one-hour session. If your paper is longer, you can come back for another session at another time.
To start a session, or to learn more, just send us a message using the chat box to the left or IM us through your iSpartan account using our screen name askthewc and we'll respond as soon as possible.
Please note, online sessions are only available during our normal business hours.

Help Me Decide
- Face to Face consulting is the classic Writing Center method. You sit down with a consultant in our office and discuss your paper live. This method is appropriate for all kinds of writing.
- Online Consulting uses Google Chat and Google Docs to create space for Web-based consultations. You and your consultant can view your writing at the same time and chat about it using IM. Since your document gets reformatted, this method is not efffective for questions about formatting or layout. It also tends to be slower than face-to-face sessions. We won't be able to go through your paper line by line, focusing only on grammar error. Instead, it's more productive to focus on larger issues like organization or thesis development.
- Ask a Quick Question is, as its name implies, for brief questions about writing, citation styles, and other issues. This is not a full consultation, so you will not get the same intensive help as you will during a normal session. To ask a question, use the chat box to the left.
