Graduate Exercise and Sport Science Society

The Graduate Exercise and Sport Science Society (GESSS) is an organization of graduate students within the Department of Exercise and Sport Science. This organization is designed to foster interaction among students and faculty within the department. GESSS is a contact system that is sensitive to the nature, needs, and desires of its members. This organization provides an opportunity for the exchange of ideas pertinent to the graduate experience.

Organization

The functions of GESSS are coordinated by the organization´s officers who are typically elected at the beginning of the Fall semester. They are:

  • President (this position is typically held by a 2nd or 3rd year doctoral student). Generally, the President acts as a liaison between students and faculty. This should be a student to whom other students can go with departmental questions and concerns; he/she helps to keep students up-to-date on upcoming events.
  • Treasurer (a 2 year position) maintains the books/finances for the Society
  • Social Director organizes social events. Traditionally, graduate students have hosted a fall and spring graduate student/faculty picnic/BBQ, as well as a winter holiday social. The social director sometimes organizes less formal events as well.
  • Representatives to faculty meetings (2): These students represent the interests and concerns of the graduate student body at Departmental faculty meetings. Every effort is made to elect one master´s and one doctoral student.
  • Colloquium Coordinator: This student works with the faculty colloquium coordinator to schedule Friday meetings throughout the academic year. Duties include determining those students who will present throughout the year; making scheduling assignments of those presentations and communicating dates to the faculty coordinator for publicizing to the department. Scheduling of graduate student presentations is coordinated with the schedules of outside speakers.
  • GSA representative: This student acts as a liaison between the Department of ESS and the Graduate Student Association of the University. Of particular importance is representation at required meetings. This attendance is necessary in order that students may apply for travel funds from the organization.

Dues

Nominal dues are charged for membership in the Society. These dues are used to cover the costs of operating the Society. In general, these funds are used primarily for social functions aimed at encouraging interactions among students and faculty.
