Ed.D Degree in ESS : A Doctoral Program for Experienced Professionals

The Department of Exercise and Sport Science offers the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree for experienced Exercise and Sport Science professionals with a minimum of 3 years of practical experience in their respective field who desire to obtain a professional doctorate that focuses on professional practice and multidisciplinary issues.

The Vision of the Ed.D. Program is to prepare educators at the highest level of excellence who are competent in the creation, synthesis, interpretation, and professional application of knowledge across the sub-disciplines of Exercise and Sport Science.

Our Mission is to engage accomplished exercise and sport science professionals in the scholarship of teaching and learning. Our philosophy is to utilize a cross disciplinary community of scholars to develop action oriented leaders in the exercise and sport sciences. Our approach is to use a combination of experiential, self-directed and collaborative learning experiences to meet the unique needs of adult learners. The strength of this program is the ability to tailor the doctoral plan of study relative to students’ professional goals. This program is unique in its focus on the practicing professional and its broad multi-disciplinary approach to translating scholarship into practice.

Program Goal 1
Graduates of the program will be able to contribute to the field of Exercise and Sport Science through the scholarship of teaching and learning
Objectives:
  • Students will engage in the discovery, integration, and application of knowledge through didactic coursework, internships, independent studies, and reflective professional practice.
  • Students will explore a variety of teaching and learning methods that are applicable to teaching adult learners.
  • Students will critically evaluate teaching practices through self, peer, or faculty assessment
  • Students will apply concepts and principles of teaching and learning within their working environment.
  • Students will be able to address professionally based problems using the appropriate tools of inquiry within their respective sub-disciplines.


Program Goal 2
Graduates of the program will be able to assume leadership roles in Exercise and Sport Science and contribute to the field through professional, institutional, and community service.
Objectives:
  • Students will develop an appreciation for service oriented leadership and administration (e.g. ACSM committee work) within their professional context.
  • Students will critically analyze a variety of leadership models within the context of Exercise and Sport Science.
  • Students will explore options for documenting administrative effectiveness.

Program Goal 3
Graduates of the program will be able to effectively communicate across the sub-disciplines in the field of Exercise and Sport Science by articulating current interdisciplinary knowledge and communicating the broader value of ESS to society.
Objectives:

  • Students will develop excellence in oral and written communication through critical evaluation of communication.
  • Students will analyze current professional issues within their respective sub-discipline and the broader field of Exercise and Sport Science.
  • Students will be able to effectively articulate interdisciplinary knowledge to a variety of audiences.
  • Students will appreciate the importance of interconnectedness between the sub-disciplines.
