Shirl J. Hoffman, Professor Emeritus

Hoffman received the BS from King´s College (NY) and the MA and Ed.D. from Columbia University Teachers College. His professional employment history spans a variety of positions in exercise and sport science including elementary physical education teacher, college basketball coach, administrator, and professor. He has served on the faculty at a number of colleges and universities, including 13 years at University of Pittsburgh and 16 years at UNCG. He came to UNCG in 1985 as Head of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science and served in that capacity until 1995. Currently he teaches two undergraduate courses: Motor learning and Performance and Introduction to Exercise and Sport Science. In addition he teaches two graduate seminars. He advises both undergraduate and graduate students.
His scholarly interests span a number of different areas, including applied motor learning, issues confronting higher education, and sport and religion. His work has been published in a wide variety of journals including Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, Journal of Motor Behavior, Perceptual and Motor Skills, Journal of the Philosophy of Sport, Arete: Journal of Sport Literature, and Quest. He is editor of the anthology: Sport and Religion (1990) and co-editor (with Janet Harris) of an introductory text: Introduction to Kinesiology (2000). He lives with his wife, Claude Mourot, in Greensboro.
