Sport & Exercise Psychology
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is part of the University
of North Carolina system. Student enrollment is approximately 15,000 students,
3000 of whom are graduate students.
The Sport and Exercise Psychology
program is housed in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science (ESS)
and within the school of the Health and Human Performance Building (HHP).
The Department of Exercise and Sport Science offers a graduate program
in sport and exercise psychology with both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.
Faculty include Dr. Diane Gill, Dr. Jennifer Etnier, and Dr. Renee Newcomer-Appaneal. The laboratory provides an environment of academic and professional excellence. The mission of the UNCG Sport and Exercise Psychology laboratory is to enhance human development and functioning by acquiring cutting edge knowledge and providing the highest quality services that contribute to the development of the field of Sport and Exercise Psychology. Our program integrates theory, research and practice, and includes the study of cognitive, emotional, psychophysiological and social factors that influence sport and exercise behaviors as well as the effects of physical activity on psychological factors.
Our graduates pursue careers as teachers, researchers, coaches, exercise leaders and sport and exercise psychology consultants. Faculty and students in the sociohistorical sport studies area are affiliated with our lab, and we often work with those in other ESS areas (exercise physiology, sports medicine, pedagogy). Our program has close ties with UNCG´s Division I athletic program, as well as with varied community programs.
