Welcome to the UNCG website of the Department of German, Russian, and Japanese Studies. We are a dynamic, student-oriented Department that offers a broad and innovative range of language, literature, and culture courses. Our mission is to provide students of German, Japanese and/or Russian with a thorough understanding of modern languages, literatures and cultures within the context of a liberal and humanistic education.
Our faculty is dedicated to teaching engaging courses on all levels of proficiency (German 203 for Music Lovers, or Russian Folklore, or Introductory Japanese, or German Conversation and Composition, or Russian Literature in Translation, or German Masterworks, etc.). We offer free language tutorials, individualized advising, affordable study abroad opportunities, and multimedia laboratory support. Check our online German Placement Test and the German Studies Roundtable. The Department is a leader in the use of educational technology (Lixl's German Studies Trails on the Web), and dedicated to fostering close relationships with the NC-business community. The new German Studies Consortium offers upper level students seminar-style courses on the NC Information Highway, and valuable distance learning opportunities.
The students in our Department form a diverse, yet close-knit campus community with interdisciplinary connections to many other UNCG schools and departments, including Art, Economics, History, International Studies, Music, Psychology, Sociology, etc. Read the comments and testimonials of our students about their experiences as majors, second majors, and minors in this Department. We hope you will enjoy your virtual visit, and explore our educational programs and interdisciplinary resources on the World Wide Web. For a quick glance, check our Department's Photo Album and our Department's academic profile. If you are on campus, come to our German Film Series, or meet our faculty at the Kaffeestunde or the posted Roundtable meetings. Our departmental lounge is in 337A McIver Building. We encourage you to consider this University and our Department in your educational plans for the future.
