The Department's approach to undergraduate education is firmly embedded in the tradition of the liberal arts. Thus, all faculty members support students to develop their research skills and to participate in the faculty's research activities. Student research is a regular component of many of the upper-level courses in the German program and thus part of the course of study for all of our majors and minors. Students who are interested in honing their research skills further and in working with a particular faculty member are encouraged to think about applying for an undergraduate research stipend. These fellowships are competitive and awarded by the Office for Undergraduate Research. Many faculty members have positive experiences in working with undergraduate researchers and are happy to develop research projects in conjunction with students. Undergraduate research helps to prepare students for graduate school. Undergraduate research can also play a major part in building additional skills in order to prepare for a variety of professional work environments. To learn more about undergraduate research please visit the webpage of the Office for Undergraduate Research and talk with your advisor or any faculty member in our Department.
