UNCG offers a study abroad program in Russian at Kazan State University. Kazan is the capital of the Tatarstan Republic located in the center of European Russia on the banks of the Volga and Kama rivers. Kazan is situated about 500 miles East of Moscow. The population is approximately 1 million. Nearly half of this number are Russian and half are Tatar. Both Tatar and Russian are used in governmental activities and taught in schools. Kazan takes pride in having one of the best and oldest universities in Russia. Kazan State University, founded in 1804, is a comprehensive, state-assisted institution of higher education that offers a wide variety of undergraduate, master’s, specialist’s and doctoral degrees. Over 16,000 students study at KSU, located in the heart of Kazan. In 1996, KSU was included on the list of the most valuable objects of the cultural heritage of Russia. Among Kazan State University’s most celebrated students are Leo Tolstoy and Vladimir Ilych Ulyanov (Lenin).
UNCG students can spend a semester or a full year in Kazan. Each semester students have the opportunity to earn 12-15 hours of Russian language and culture credit. Courses include: Conversation, Reading Comprehension, Phonetics, Listening Comprehension, and Russian Song. Course work will familiarize students with Russian and Tatar culture in addition to full immersion in language study. All classes are tailored to students’ specific language levels.
