Here is what some of our students in the Department of German, Russian and Japanese Studies have to say about their experiences, past and present!

I am definitely one of the department's most enthusiastic advocates! The German department offers a dynamic selection of exciting courses ranges from Goethe and Nietzsche to Weimar Culture and Frauenliteratur. The atmosphere in the department as a whole is open and supportive, and for willing students, there is ample opportunity for independent study and individual research projects. Combine that to the possibility of spending a year abroad at a German university, as I did, and you have an ideal scenario for undergraduate studies.

Since I graduated, I have been working at the UNCG Library. I just love working in the library. I do use my German and Russian knowledge here at the library. If a German/Russian title is requested, I help my co-workers decipher what it means.

In the summer of 1998 I finally traveled to Europe. I had a wonderful time and I just wanted to let you know that the skills I developed in your German class helped me tremendously. I still have that drive to continue my education in German. I must say that the website Dr. Lixl has created is great. It has helped me to maintain my vocabulary and given slightly challenging readings, without being to challenging. I just want to thank you and let you know that you have made a difference to me.

The great amount of insight, compassion, and intellectual prowess that is characteristic of Dr. Adams helped me learn not only a new language, but also a new, deeper way of thinking.

The most valuable contribution to my study in the German Department was small class size along with the use of computers for class work. The most valuable skill I took with me from the department, other than the ability to speak the language, was the ability to make web pages. This one skill has opened many doors for my career.

Although German is my second major, I have enjoyed it immensely. The German department faculty are outstanding people and always there to help. Together they have built an outstanding and effective German program.

I signed up for Dr. Kathleen Ahern's class on a whim, to fulfill the foreign language requirement. The full extent of her influence has yet to be seen. I am now drawing from my experiences in the classroom every day as I teach English to non-native speakers. In addition, my work with Russian Refugees has greatly benefited from the language skills I picked up at UNCG and abroad. I do my best to draw on the examples set by Dr. Ahern. A classroom of friends that is more relaxed than the alternative and more progress can be made with smiles and encouragement.

The department is small and very personal. I made friends among students and faculty I will have forever.

Dr. Pynes's classes were really interesting -- I iked conversation / composition because it forced me to write. Also enjoyed mythology. LOVED the history of German class. Lixl's upper-level classes were great. I enjoyed the fin-de-siecle Vienna class, where we read Zweig and Rilke. Also, his modern culture class was very interesting. I'm glad to know about movies like Nosferatu and Metropolitan, not just the movies themselves, but why they are important. Also, the fact that he was using the Web, before most people had even heard of it, is important. Lately, I've been teaching German and it's wonderful to be able to draw on the knowledge that the UNCG department gave me. My students certainly appreciate it.

Faculty members are always there when you have a question, concern or just want to sit and talk. Professors use experiences from their own lives to make the learning process more than just pen and paper. The entire department makes sure that each and every student feels confident and encouraged, motivated to succeed. I look forward to returning to UNCG's German and Russian department in 2001 after my study abroad in Bamberg.

I took Dr. Baumgartner's course on "Mothers and Daughters in German Literature" this spring. I liked the readings and the different ethnic perspectives presented in this course. It was a wonderful, eye-opening class!
