<!--#include virtual="/gen/includes/gen-header.html" --> <h2>Meet students of the Genetic Counseling <br> Class of 2012 ...</span></h2> <table border=1 cellpadding=0 width="76%"> <tr> <td width=196><p><img width=190 height=250 id="_x0000_i1032" src=Michelle.jpeg alt=Michelle></p></td> <td width=553><p><strong><span style='color:#003366'>Michelle Burch </span></strong><span style='color:#003366'>graduated with her bachelors in Microbiology and Cell Science with minors in Chemistry and Spanish from the University of Florida.  While an undergrad, Michelle volunteered in a Zoology Lab studying the genetics behind a whole genome duplication and was involved in the Undergraduate Women in Science club.  After graduation, Michelle worked in a Human Genetics lab at UF for four years and was able to shadow pediatric and cancer genetic counselors at Shands Teaching Hospital.  During this time she also volunteered at Arbor House, a home for displaced pregnant women.  It was after working with these genetic counselors, women at Arbor House, and learning about the field that secured her passion for the profession.</span></p> <p><span style='color:#003366'><a href="mailto:mnburch@uncg.edu">mnburch@uncg.edu</a></span></p> <p><i><span style='color:#0066CC'> I choose UNCG because I knew it was the place that would help me grow best. &nbsp;The way that the program is set up is really the style I saw myself learning. &nbsp;I was also really excited about their rotation sites. </span></i></p></td> </tr> <tr> <td width=196><p><img border=0 width=190 height=250 id="_x0000_i1031" src=Nikki.jpeg alt=Nikki></p></td> <td width=553><p><b><span style='color:#003366'>Natanya (Nikki) Fleming </span></b><span style='color:#003366'>is originally from Boca Raton, FL but moved to Cary, NC when she was 12 years old. She completed her undergraduate education at Oberlin College in Ohio in 2008, where she majored in psychology and neuroscience. Nikki first became interested in genetic counseling because of her job starting in 2009 (and into the present) working as a scribe and assistant to an oncologist. Her daily responsibility of taking a pedigree and patient history was fascinating and she wanted to do more! She met a genetic counselor at UNC-G and after talking about the profession knew it was the best direction for her. <a href="mailto:nnflemin@uncg.edu">nnflemin@uncg.edu</a></span></p></td> </tr> <tr> <td width=196><p><img border=0 width=190 height=250 id="_x0000_i1030" src=Brittney.jpeg alt=Brittney></p></td> <td width=553><p><b><span style='color:#003366'>Brittney Guerrero </span></b><span style='color:#003366'>grew up in Loveland, Co. She completed her undergraduate coursework in Food Science and Human Nutrition at Colorado State University.  After working for 2 years in Denver, she was introduced to genetic counseling by her undergraduate career counselor. In preparation for this opportunity, Brittney shadowed for a one year in an adult genetics clinic. She also spent a year volunteering as a crisis counselor for an inner city pregnancy center. Brittney now works as a graduate assistant with the genetic counseling department. <a href="mailto:bnguerre@uncg.edu">bnguerre@uncg.edu</a></span></p></td> </tr> <tr> <td width=196><p><img border=0 width=190 height=250 id="_x0000_i1029" src=Sara.jpeg alt=Sara></p></td> <td width=553><p><b><span style='color:#003366'>Sara Herbstreith </span></b><span style='color:#003366'>grew up in Durham, NC.  She attended UNC-Chapel Hill where she received a Biology B.S.  She was a member of Beta Beta Beta and Phi Beta Kappa.  Sara has spent the past two years studying gut development in zebra fish in the cell biology department at Duke University.  As a native, Sara is very excited to remain in North Carolina to complete her master s degree in genetic counseling.  Sara is also working at a TA in the biology department here. <a href="mailto:seherbst@uncg.edu">seherbst@uncg.edu</a></span></p> <p><i><span style='color:#0066CC'> I chose UNCG because there are so many opportunities available here that you don't find at other programs. &nbsp;Being centrally located around so many medical centers (Duke, UNC- Chapel Hill, Wake Forest, Moses Cone...) really gives this program and its students an advantage and prepares us to be very well-rounded genetic counselors. </span></i></p></td> </tr> <tr> <td width=196><p><img border=0 width=190 height=250 id="_x0000_i1028" src=Julie.jpeg alt=Julie></p></td> <td width=553><p><b><span style='color:#003366'>Julie Jesiolowski </span></b><span style='color:#003366'>is from Easton, Pennsylvania. She graduated with distinction from The Pennsylvania State University with a B.S. in Psychology in 2009.  During her time at Penn State, Julie volunteered as a tutor, academic counselor, and a lion ambassador. She was also actively involved in a genetics laboratory. Julie worked as a therapeutic family coach before starting graduate school, gaining further counseling experience of high-risk populations. She also spent time shadowing genetic counselors in cancer and prenatal clinics. At UNCG, she works as a graduate assistant for the genetic counseling program. <a href="mailto:jdjesiol@uncg.edu">jdjesiol@uncg.edu</a></span></p> <p><span class=style51> UNCG is a perfect fit for me. This program has so many opportunities available and everyone I met matched my passion for genetic counseling. The faculty, rotation sites, and students are all incredible. </span></p></td> </tr> <tr> <td width=196><p><img border=0 width=190 height=250 id="_x0000_i1027" src=Courtney.jpeg alt=Courtney></p></td> <td width=553><p><strong><span style='color:#003366'>Courtney Kisss</span></strong><span style='color:#003366'> grew up in Prince Edward County in Ontario, Canada.&nbsp; She attended the University of Guelph where she completed a B.S. Honors degree in Biological Sciences with a minor in Molecular Biology and Genetics in 2010. &nbsp;&nbsp;While completing her degree, Courtney was a volunteer at a 24-hour distress hotline and a prenatal genetic diagnosis clinic.&nbsp; She was also a member and captain of the varsity rowing team, and a spinning instructor at the campus athletic centre.&nbsp; Courtney is currently working as a Graduate Assistant for the Genetic Counseling program. <a href="mailto:c_kiss@uncg.edu">c_kiss@uncg.edu</a></span></p> <p><i><span style='color:#0066CC'> I chose UNCG for a lot of reasons. Mainly I loved the friendly atmosphere and the emphasis on community involvement in the program. &nbsp;I like that we get a chance to do several clinical rotations so we can feel prepared when we get out in the working world. </span></i></p></td> </tr> <tr> <td width=196><p><img border=0 width=190 height=250 id="_x0000_i1026" src=Ryan.jpeg alt=Ryan></p></td> <td width=553><p><strong><span style='color:#003366'>Ryan Noss </span></strong><span class=style11><span style='color:#003366'>was born and raised in Cortland, Ohio, northeast Ohio. He graduated cum laude from The Ohio State University in spring of 2010 with a B.S. in microbiology and a minor in psychology. While at OSU, Ryan participated in research at a virology lab, was a genetic counselor intern at the OSUMC's Clinical Cancer Genetic Program, volunteered with Heartland Hospice, and was elected to Ohio State's College of Biological Sciences Honorary. As an intern with Clinical Cancer Genetics, Ryan aided in conducting several research projects concerning various topics including: breast cancer, uveal melanoma, and Cowden's syndrome. While at UNCG, Ryan is a graduate assistant in the genetic counseling program.
