Genetic Counseling Program

Congratulations to the Class of 2013 ...

Erin Eaton is from Crestwood, KY, just outside of Louisville. She graduated from Western Kentucky University summa cum laude, where she majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry and Psychology. During her time at WKU, she volunteered as a Peer Health Educator and HIV Counselor on campus and as a weekend volunteer for the Center for Courageous Kids, a medical camp in Scottsville, KY. To prepare for graduate school, she completed an internship with the genetic counselors at the Weisskopf Child Evaluation Center in Louisville and volunteered as an advocate for Hope Harbor, Inc., a Sexual Trauma Recovery Center. Erin was drawn to the profession because of her love of science and a passion for helping individuals with special needs.eeeaton@uncg.edu
 
Ledare Finley grew up in Lewisburg, TN but has lived in the Knoxville, TN area for over 20 years and considers it home. She received her undergraduate degree in Cell Biology and her M.S. in Plant Physiology and Genetics from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. After graduate school, Ledare worked in molecular biology research laboratories and held a research associate position with the entomology and plant pathology departments at UTK from 1992 to 2011. After many years of working at the lab bench, Ledare is ready for a change from basic research and the genetic counseling field will allow her to use her genetics background to help people every day. To prepare for the program, she shadowed genetic counselors at Thompson Cancer Center and UT Hospital in Knoxville and volunteered with Contact Helpline in Oak Ridge, TN. Ledare is currently a teaching assistant for the biology department at UNCG.slfinley@uncg.edu
Rebecca Fowler grew up in Winston-Salem, NC. She attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where she completed a B.S. in Biology and a B.A. in Psychology. While at UNCW, Rebecca spent two years interning at a prenatal genetic counseling clinic. She also spent a semester volunteering at Planned Parenthood. Rebecca is currently a Teaching Assistant for the biology program at UNCG. rpcampbe@uncg.edu
Kati Joseph grew up in Oakland, ME. She graduated from Bowdoin College in 2009 with a major in neuroscience and a minor in education studies. After college she completed two terms as an AmeirCorps volunteer, designing and publishing a newspaper for high school students. She also shadowed a cancer genetic counselor and volunteered as an advocate for survivors of sexual assault. At UNCG, Kati works as a graduate assistant for the genetic counseling program. kljoseph@uncg.edu
Amy Kendall grew up in Erie, PA. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Dayton, graduating in 2010 with a B.S. in Biology and minor in Psychology. During her time at UD, she volunteered in a genetics lab with a focus on evolution in genetics and also volunteered at Dayton Children’s Hospital. She also served as a committee board member for both her Chi Omega sorority and Pre-Health National Honor Fraternity. To prepare for graduate school, she volunteered at the Bluegrass rape crisis center and shadowed a genetic counselor in a cancer clinic. She also spent a year volunteering with the pediatric and adult day programs at Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital where she worked closely with patients diagnosed with Down syndrome and autism. Amy is currently working as a graduate assistant for the genetic counseling program. a_kendal@uncg.edu
Rebecca Okashah graduated from the University of Georgia, where she majored in Biology and Psychology.  While at the University of Georgia, she participated in research in a plant genetics lab.  She spent the past year and half working at Emory Genetics Laboratory as a clinical genetics technologist.  To prepare for graduates school, she spent time shadowing prenatal, cancer, and pediatric genetic counselors and volunteered at a 24-hour sexual assault hotline.  She is currently working as a TA in the Biology Department. Rebecca is open to any and all forms of questions regarding genetic counseling. r_okasha@uncg.edu
Anna Wesseler grew up in Columbia City, IN. She graduated from the University of Indianapolis with a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry. While working on her degree at the University of Indianapolis, she worked as a tutor in the university’s writing lab and was involved with her school’s Best Buddies program. Experiences that helped prepare her for graduate school include working in a biomedical engineering lab, acting as a life review facilitator at a local nursing home and shadowing a pediatric genetic counselor. Anna currently works as a graduate assistant for the genetic counseling program at UNCG and would be happy to help with any questions from those considering a career in genetic counseling. a_wessel@uncg.edu
