Dr. Liu is interested in the interaction of human activities and natural systems and its impact on the environment. His research focuses on water-related environmental problems. Dr. Liu has been published in Forest Ecology and Management, Journal of the American Water Resources Association, Water, Air and Soil Pollution, and Estuaries.  He is involved in studying the effects of land use patterns, landscape complexity, and short- and long-term weather variations on the transport of water, sediment, and plant nutrients in the Chesapeake Bay drainage basin. His recent research has been sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Smithsonian Institution.
