Jeffrey C. Patton, Professor

Cartography, GIS, History of Cartography, Earth Science

Dr. Patton’s research has focused on cognitive mapping, the history of cartography, scientific visualization, and geographic education, particularly studying maps as communication devices. His work has been published in a variety of journals, including The Annals of the Association of American Geographers, The Cartographic Journal, Cartographic Perspectives, and Cartography and Geographic Information Systems. His books include The United States and Canada: A Systematic Approach, Applied Human Geography, and A Geography of the Carolinas, all co-authored with D. Gordon Bennett. He has been involved in archaeological investigations mapping the Greek island of Mochlos and the surrounding sea floor. Current research has focused on 19th century mapping, including American school atlases and urban panoramic maps. His research has been sponsored by grants from UNCG, the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Syngenta Corporation.
