UNS 105: The Learning Community Experience Course

The Grogan College Learning Communities Program is modeled after similar programs across the nation inspired by The National Learning Communities Project http://www.evergreen.edu/washcenter/project.asp?pid=73

University Studies 105: The Learning Community Experience Course

In order to bring everyone together in a common learning experience, every Grogan learning community has its own section of our 2 credit UNS 105: The Learning College Community Experience Course. In UNS 105, faculty, peer academic leaders, and LC students undertake a variety of activities, workshops, field trips and projects that aim to accomplish the following main objectives:

  • COMMUNITY BUILDING AMONG THE LC MEMBERS, MEETING INTERESTING PEOPLE AND FORMING MEANING FUL FRIENDSHIPS AND PARTNERSHIPS

  • DEVELOPING STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR OWN EDUCATION & LIFE DECISIONS

  • CRITICAL REFLECTION ON THE VALUES, GOALS AND MISSION
    OF HIGHER EDUCATION—WHY AM I HERE AND WHAT DO I WANT TO ACHIEVE?

  • COLLABORATION ACROSS DISCIPLINES—LEARNING HOW TO DRAW ON SEVERAL FILEDS OF STUDY TO SOLVE OR SHED LIGHT ON A PROBLEM OR ISSUE

  • FACULTY MENTORING AND ACADEMIC ADVISING

  • ENHANCING ACADEMIC STUDY SKILLS

  • WELLNESS—HOW TO CARE FOR OURSELVES PHYSICALLY, EMOTIONALLY AND SOCIALLY

  • DIVERSITY AND GLOBAL AWARENESS—BECOMING A RESPONSIBLE AND INFORMED CITIZEN OF THE WORLD
