PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS - Courses & Academic Learning Communities for 2010-11


CREATIVITY AND PERFORMANCE:
Intended for students with serious curiosity about the creative and performing arts, this learning community draws on current theory, critical reflection, movement, performance, and site-specific collaboration to explore the creative process.  

Required Courses:  DCE 323:01 “The Arts as Human Experience”, ENG 101: “English Composition I”, and UNS 105: "The Learning Community Experience".  (NOTE: fulfills General Education Core Requirements in Fine Arts and Reading and Discourse).

ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND BUSINESS
This Learning Community helps you develop the attitudes, outlook and skills of a successful entrepreneur. Learn how to think outside the box, assess business needs and opportunities, make effective use of resource, and lead others to imagine and create new organizations that provide useful services and products.

Required Courses: BUS 105: "Intro to Business Skills Development, ISM 110: "Business Computing", CST 105 Intro to Communications Studies, and UNS 105: "The Learning Community Experience". line

GLOBAL AWARENESS
In this learning community, you expand your horizons and prepare for a personal and professional future in the emerging global village by studying international and global topics and problems, course work, leadership development and service projects.

Required Courses: SOC 202: Social Issues in Global Perspective”, ENG 101: “English Composition I”, and UNS 105: "The Learning Community Experience". (NOTE: Satisfies General Education Requirements in Social and Behavioral Sciences and Reading and Discourse). line

MAKING MUSIC
A COMMUNITY OF PERFORMING MUSICIANS:
If you are admitted to the UNCG School of Music, then take advantage of this very special opportunity to be part of the Grogan College Music Learning Community. You will enhance and expand your musicianship by living, studying and creating with other music majors and music faculty.

Required Courses: MUS 107: Technology for Musicians, MUS 135: “Introduction to Musicology” and UNS 105: "The Learning Community Experience" (NOTE: MUS 107 and MUS 135 are required for all Music majors).line  

NURSING PROFESSION
Nursing is a very important and rewarding field, but also a demanding one requiring intensive preparation and sustained professional development. To assist potential Nursing majors get started in their program of study and professional development, Grogan College offers a learning community specifically tailored to pre-nursing majors.

SOCIAL SERVICE PROFESSIONS
This Interest Group serves students considering course work and careers in a variety of health and human services fields such as counseling, public health, social work and family care services. Learn to apply social science concepts and methods to understanding human problems and behaviors and explore your options for a career in human services.

Required Courses: PSY 121: General Psychology, FMS 170: Freshmen Seminar in Social & Behavioral Sciences, ENG 101: English Composition I, UNS 105: The Learning Community Experience. (NOTE:  Satisfies General Education Requirements in Social and Behavioral Sciences and Reading and Discourse) line

SCIENCE AND HEALTH PROFESSIONS
This Interest Group is especially designed for students who love science or who are considering careers that require a foundation in basic sciences.  It provides an excellent foundation for those interested in Pre-Med, Pre—Dentistry, and Pre–Vet studies, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, or Medical Technologies.  It also serves those considering careers that require a significant foundation in science

Required Courses: Bio 111: Principles of Biology l, (LECTURE), Bio 111 (LAB), CHE 111General Chemistry I, (LECTURE), CHE 112: (LAB), ENG 101: English Composition I and   UNS 105: 05, “The Interest Group Experience”. (Satisfies Gen Ed Requirements in Life Sciences, Natural Sciences and Reading and Discourse)line

TEACHING AS A PROFESSION
Students in this Interest Group explore various issues related to education in contemporary society and they find out if teaching is truly right for them.  At the same time, you will meet and make friends with other students who share your interests, receive personal attention and support from your instructor, participate in study skills, career development and diversity workshops, go on field experiences in the public schools and have some fun in the process.

Required Courses: HEA 201 “Personal Health”, (for relevant Ed majors) PSY 121: “General Psychology”, (for relevant Ed majors) “ENG 101: English Composition 1”, and UNS 105: “The Interest Group Experience”. (This Interest Group satisfies the General Education Requirement in Philosophical, Religious and Ethical Principles, Social and Behavioral Sciences and Reading and Discourse as well as requirements for certain Education majors and for Secondary Licensure).

This learning community is designed to serve students considering majors and careers in a variety of fields related to Exercise, Fitness Training, Recreation and Sports Medicine and Kinesiology. (Under Development for 2010).
