PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS - faq

Is Grogan College the same as UNCG or is it a separate college?
YES. Grogan is UNCG. It is a program established by UNCG to help our freshmen students make a successful transition to college by helping them meet other students, connect with teachers, and work on important study and professional skills as well as personal growth and leadership development.

If I join Grogan College will my degree still be from UNGC?
YES. As a UNCG program, all of the courses, teachers and credits are from UNCG.

Do Grogan College courses count for my major?
Depending on the Academic Interest Group that you join, some of your courses might be part of a specific major, and others will be General Education requirements. Even your UNS 105 course caries 2 credits that cont toward the total number of credits needed for graduation.

Can I be in Grogan if my major is not offered?
YES. Because many of the courses in our Academic Interest Groups are General Education courses, you can still benefit. You can join an interest group that requires Gen Ed courses, take your Major courses outside of Grogan, and still benefit from the community support, academic skills development and faculty and peer mentoring.

What is a General Education course and why do I need them?
Most colleges and universities want you to be a well rounded individual, so most require General Education courses in addition to your Major courses. Gen Ed courses help you develop core skills such as writing, speaking, critical thinking. They also provide essential background knowledge about history, art, literature and the contemporary world that is common sense for well educated people

What is UNS 105?
All Grogan Academic Interest Groups meet together with their faculty fellow and Peer Academic Leader (PAL) in their known UNS 105 class. I this class, you will get to know other students and one of your teachers, and you will do projects and outings intended to build essential skills, develop team work and leadership, and broaden your awareness of the world.

Do I have t live in Grogan my whole four years?
NO. Grogan is currently a one year program for freshmen. If you would like to stay in Grogan, you can apply to become an upper class Peer Academic Leader (PAL)

Can I choose a roommate and be in Grogan?
YES. However, both students must apply and be accepted into an Academic Interest Group, and you must let us know before you or your roommate is assigned to another residence hall by Housing. You and your roommate DO NOT have to be in the same interest group, but one of you will likely be housed on a floor away form their group.

Do I have a life outside of Grogan?
YES. You will take courses that are not part of your interest group requirements, and we encourage you to join student organizations and get involved throughout campus.

How do I apply?
Apply on line or call us and we will end you a paper application. BE SURE THAT YOU ALSO APPLY FOR HOUSING AND SELECT GROGAN AS YOUR FIRST CHOICE.

When will I know if I am accepted?
In most cases, we will respond to your application with 2 weeks or less.
