Special Topics: Aging and Business: The Business Opportunity of Healthy Aging (GRO 676-01) Examines the current and future impact of the growing aging population on business opportunities. Specific attention is given to “anti-aging” products and services that extend the healthy lifespan through exercise, nutrition, supplementation and/or other means. A Business Opportunity Analysis will be developed. May 20-June 24, Tuesday evenings. Taught by Dr. Cody Sipe, 1.5 credit hours. (CRN 50606)

Special Topics: Aging and Business: Senior Housing Communities (GRO 676-02)
Assisted living and continuing care retirement communities, as well as a variety of similar living arrangements, are serving an increasing number of older consumers and their caregivers. A wide range of professionals need a working knowledge of purpose built housing options available to older adults:
• Financial advisors, geriatric care managers, aging network professionals and senior housing marketers who will help older adults make decisions about living arrangements in retirement.
• Care providers who desire to work in such settings.
• Developers and investors who will work to produce and expand housing options.
• Managers and care executives who will administer retirement communities.
• Researchers and analysts who will study emerging housing options.
This course will provide an introduction to the organization, financing and regulation of purpose built housing communities for older adults including assisted living and continuing care retirement communities.
Executive Style Format: The executive style format for this class allows students at a distance to attend with only one two-day visit to campus. Students will complete four distance learning modules (3 contact hours) over a two week period at the beginning of the first Summer Session via the web. During the third week of the session, students will come to campus for a two day seminar on Friday, June 12 and Saturday, June 13 for 15 contact hours. In follow-up to the seminar, students will complete a major project case study by the end of the session. Taught by Sandra Crawford Leak. 1.5 hours credit. (CRN 50607)

Gerontology Internship or Supervised Research (GRO 649-01). Supervised experience in structured settings for older adults, linking practice to theory; or supervised research in a relevant area of gerontology for professional development. Three credit hours. Graded on S-U basis. May 20-June 24, 2009. Supervised and approved by instructor Dr. Jan Wassel. Prerequisites: GRO 501 and permission of instructor. (CRN 50604)

Gerontology Internship/ Research Experience II (GRO 679-01). Final internship or research experience in gerontology. 160-200 hours in a program approved site developed from among nonprofit, governmental, or business setting. Three hours credit. Graded on S-U basis. May 20-June 24, 2009. Supervised by Dr. Janice Wassel. (CRN 50605)
