GSA fellowship — the highest class of membership — was awarded to Kennedy-Malone for her “outstanding and continuing work” in the field of gerontology.

Wednesday, March 28, 2012 Building Capacity for Collaborative Interdisciplinary Gerontology Research
UNCG, Ferguson Building, Room 247, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Judith A. Spross, PhD, RN, FAAN, Professor of Nursing at the Univ. of Southern Maine, leads a professional development workshop to create a locally cohesive research community prepared to address the biologic, clinical, and policy needs of elders in our society. Participants will use Strengthsfinder 2.0 (Rath, 2007) assessments to explore possibilities. Activities will help participants identify UNCG aging-related research expertise, build faculty collaboration, coordinate funding resources and focus research talents for active engagement in the UNCG Gerontology Research Network. Participation is free, limited to 25 participants, and preregistration is required! Lunch is provided. Upon preregistration you will receive a Strengthsfinder 2.0 book, complete the assessment tool, and identify your top strengths and professional goals. Judith A. Spross, PhD, RN, FAAN, Professor of Nursing at the Univ. of Southern Maine, leads two professional development workshops for UNCG faculty and students. Spross engages us in participatory demonstrations of non-pharmacologic CAT therapies that complement traditional therapies: Reiki, relaxation and imagery, breathing, music, bibliotherapy, and distractive techniques. Experience these yourself! Participation is free, limited to 10 participants in each session, and preregistration is required! Wear comfortable clothing and arrive with an open mind. Friday, September 23, 2011 Open House for new UNCG Therapeutic Recreation Lab
The Department of Community and Therapeutic Recreation is proud to announce the opening of the new Therapeutic Recreation Lab in Ferguson 247. This new space provides practice areas for future recreational therapists to learn wheelchair mobility skills, to use adapted recreation equipment safely, and to assess clients and evaluate outcomes. We would like to invite you to our CTR Open House on Friday, September 23rd between 2- 4 p.m. Students will provide demonstrations and faculty will be available to talk with future students and others who may be interested in our program.

Staton Noel, Licensing Assistant in the UNCG Office of Innovation Commercialization (OIC) elucidates OIC's role facilitating research commercialization and industry collaborations with specific emphasis on improving the lives of people as they age. With 20 years experience in a large pharmaceutical company researching novel drugs for diseases associated with aging, Noel presently pursues a dual degree MS in Gerontology/MBA at UNCG. He aims to develop and market products that benefit an aging society. See the flyer.

Saturday, September 20, 2011 Pet Partners Course taught by GRN member Dr. Linda Buettner
A class taught by licensed Delta Instructor Dr. Linda Buettner (GRN member) will teach human handlers how to use a companion animal to help others in need. UNCG's Department of Community and Therapeutic Recreation will be hosting the Delta Society's Pet Partners training course on Saturday, September 10, 2011 in the Therapeutic Recreation Lab on our campus. Most domesticated animals can become a pet partner (i.e. horses, dogs, cats, chickens, bunnies, and others) through the four step process. Step 1: Take the Pet Partners course. Step 2: Vet Check and Practice as a team. Step 3. Take the team evaluation test. Step 4. Send in all paperwork to Delta Society for national registration. Over 10,000 nationally registered teams currently visit hospitals, nursing homes, special schools, and rehabilitation facilities world wide. The cost of the class is $75 and includes the book. UNCG students, faculty, and staff pay the reduced cost of $50. CONGRATULATIONS to LINDA BUETTNER for recent publication in the Journal of Aging Research (volume 2011) of a clinical study titled
Cognitive Stimulation for Apathy in Probable Early-Stage Alzheimer's. Preliminary findings suggest that cognitive stimulation activities designed for individuals with early-stage AD might have a strong impact on apathy, depression, and overall quality of life. http://www.sage-hindawi.com/journals/jar/2011/480890/ref/
CONGRATULATIONS TO LAURIE KENNEDY-MALONE as a book she co-authored "Integrating Gerontological Content into Advanced Practice
Nursing Education" was named 2010 Book of the Year by the American Journal of Nursing. “As directors of advanced practice nursing programs struggle to find resources to convert their existing adult APN tracks into adult–gerontology programs, this book offers a clear path for integrating critical content throughout an entire program.” Kennedy-Malone’s co-author is Carolyn Auerhahn of the College of Nursing at
New York University.
CONGRATULATIONS TO JANE MYERS, Ph.D. (Counseling and Educationial Development) who has been selected by the NC Counseling Association to receive its most prestigious honor, the Ella Stephens Barrett award.
CONGRATULATIONS to JANICE WASSEL, Ph.D., Director of the UNCG Gerontology Program, who has been elected President of the Southern Gerontological Society (SGS), a network of the South's most respected gerontology professionals. SGS members, are educators, aging network personnel, researchers, health professionals, and policy makers. SGS provides the bridge between research and practice, translating and applying knowledge in the field of aging. As SGS President, Dr. Wassel will preside at the 32nd Annual Meeting of the SGS, "The New Aging Enterprise" in April 2011 in Raleigh, NC. The 2011 Aging is Good Business summit, originally conceived by Dr. Wassel and now in it's 6th year, is a pre-conference to the SGS annual meeting, April 14, 2011 and carries the theme "The Business of Health Care Promotion". CONGRATULATIONS to JANE MYERS, Ph.D. (Counseling and Educational Development) and her colleagues in Hong Kong who received a grant from the Research Grants Council at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The grant for $65,796 will fund a 30-month study of teacher wellness and hopefully the development of a new model of wellness for China. Co-researchers on the grant include Dr. Patrick Lau, Principal Investigator, from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Dr. Raymond Chui Chan from Hong Kong Baptist University and Dr. Mantak Yuen from the University of Hong Kong.
CONGRATULATIONS to LINDA BUETTNER, PH.D., CTRS who recently received the 2010 Barry Reisberg Award for Non-Pharmacologic Research,
Theory, and Clinical Practice . This award honors an accomplished clinician and researcher each year for their distinguished contributions to the field of nonpharmacologic Alzheimer’s disease treatment and care. It is named for Dr. Barry Reisberg, Clinical Director of New York University's Aging and Dementia Research Center, who is a psychiatrist, geriatric psychiatrist, and psychopharmacologist and whose research and practice bridges all forms of treatment.
Buettner has been invited to New York City where she will present a lecture at a public awards ceremony in June and receive this wonderful honor. The award and lecture are jointly sponsored by Forest Laboratories and
The Hearthstone Alzheimer’s Foundation (founded in 1995 by Dr. John Zeisel), which promotes primarily
non-pharmacologic approaches (e.g., environmental design, therapeutic gardens, caregiver communication
training, family awareness, family participation in care giving, alternative health care, diet, exercise, music,
art, etc.) to treatment for the millions of people coping with Alzheimer’s. The Foundation’s mission is to
develop approaches to care and treatment that coordinate non-pharmacologic with pharmaceutical treatment
to address the complex needs of this growing population and their care partners. Non-pharmacologic treatments are believed to improve health outcomes without side effects.
