July
16, 2009 Dr. Bei Wu participates
in $1.3 million NIH grant linking gum disease to memory loss. The
National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded $1.3 million to an interdisciplinary
team investigating how oral health affects memory.
Dr. Bei Wu, a gerontologist at UNCG,
leads the research examining studies
of thousands of people. In the new study, the researchers
will use several existing data sets to further examine the relationship between
oral health and cognitive function over a
period of time. Large data sets allow control for several
factors that could affect both oral health and cognitive function, such as
socioeconomic status and medical conditions including cardiovascular diseases.
June 1, 2009 Dr. Linda Buettner and Suzanne
Fitzsimmons recently
published NEST
Approach: Dementia Practice Guidelines for Disturbing Behaviors. "Healthcare
providers serving as behavior specialists for older adults with dementia should
be encouraged to examine the Needs, Environment,
Stimulation,
and Techniques (N.E.S.T.) used in the care of the individual with disturbing
behaviors. With this newfound information the team can create an appropriate
plan of care and a supportive nest for living an active, engaged life, despite
memory
loss."
