Cheryl Buehler: I'm interested in how family processes, particularly marital relations and parenting, affect youth development. One of my research projects, The Family Life Project, is a longitudinal study of this topic. http://web.utk.edu/~famlife/home.htm Click here for a paper on Cognitive Appraisals. Much of this work has been conducted in collaboration with graduate students and established socialization scholars (Barber & Buehler, 1996; Buehler & Gerard, 2002; Buehler, Krishnakumar, Stone, Anthony, Pemberton, Gerard, & Barber, 1998; Gerard & Buehler, 1999; Gerard & Buehler, in press; Krishnakumar, Buehler, & Barber, 2003; Stone, Buehler, & Barber, 2002). Much of the work with Dr. Jean Gerard (a former doctoral student, now at Bowling Green State University) examines the role that cumulative risk plays in youth development. Click here for an in press paper about cumulative risk or click here for a paper about youth attributes both with Dr. Jean Gerard.
David Demo: My research focuses on the influences of divorce, family structure, and family relationships on the well-being of children and parents. I am particularly interested in how parent-child and parent-adolescent relationships change during family transitions and how these relationships influence children's and adolescents' development.
Anne Fletcher: Dr. Fletcher is currently involved in several projects that consider the nature of parental and peer influences on adolescent well-being. One effort considers the extent to which a number of different aspects of parental behavior are linked with adolescent involvement in problem behavior. A second effort examines the manner in which adolescents' participation in extracurricular activities is influenced by the extent to which their friends are also involved in such activities.
Andrew Supple:My research program involves studies of parental influence on adolescent outcomes across cultures. In addition, I have an interest in adolescent risk-protective factors for and the prevention of adolescent substance use. I am currently conducting studies to ascertain whether specific risk and protective factors demonstrate similar associations with adolescent substance use across various contexts.
