Questions and Answers About BK Licensure

1. What is required to be admitted to teacher education?

• Admission to the HDF department (i.e., 2.5 GPA; at least a C in 211, 212, & 302; 60 s.h.)

•2.7 GPA

• Passing score on all three parts of the PPST (Praxis I exam) OR a score of 1100 or higher on the SAT OR 24 or higher on the ACT. You are also exempt from the Reading and Writing Sections of the Praxis I if you score 550 or higher on the Verbal Section of the SAT or 24 or higher on the English section of the ACT. You are exempt from the Math Section of the Praxis I if you score 550 or higher on the Math Section of the SAT or 24 or higher on the Math Section of the ACT.

Only students who will be student teaching in Fall 2010 or Spring 2011 will need to take the PPST. Students in later semesters will not be required to take the PPST (PRAXIS I), however they will still need the PRAXIS II (taken during student teaching).

2. What is the PPST?

• The Pre-Professional Standards Test tests knowledge in reading, writing, and math.

• Passing scores are as follows: Reading—176, Writing—173, Math—173, or a combined score of 522.

• It is strongly recommended that you take the PPST for the first time during your sophomore year.

3. Can I study for the PPST?

• Yes! Most of the larger bookstores will carry study guides for the PPST.

• Assistance is also available (including tutoring) at the Student Success Center (334-7533) and a tutorial program (PLATO) is available at the Teaching Resources Center (Ferguson 249, Phone # 334-4035). Call in advance to make an appointment to use the tutorial.

4. Where can I take the PPST?

• You need to obtain the Praxis Series Bulletin, which can be picked up at the Counseling and Testing Center (12 Gove Building), the Office of Student Advising & Recruitment Center (324 Curry Building), or the BK Bulletn Board next to 154 Stone Bldg

• This Bulletin will provide information on the current fees, the dates the test will be offered, and the locations. The test is usually offered six times a year and students typically sign up to take the test at UNCG, but it may be taken at another campus as well. • You will use the application in the Bulletin to register for the test.

• The second choice for taking the PPST is to take it on the computer at Prometric Testing. You will need to call a Prometric to sign up for the test (336-854-4230). If you take the test on the computer and do not pass one or more sections you will have to wait 30 days before you can take that part(s) of the test again. Prometric is located in the Koger Center at 3 Centerview Drive (off High Point Road) in Greensboro.

5. When should I be admitted to Teacher Education (or the Teachers Academy)?

• Note the application deadlines on the table below for the Teachers Academy and Student Teaching.

• You may fill out an application to be admitted to Teacher Education in the HDF department office in 248 Stone Building or online (http://www.uncg.edu/ted/teach_acad_applications.html).

• You must attach an official copy of your PRAXIS scores OR proof of your SAT scores with your application to the Teachers Academy.

• After admission to the Teachers Academy all students must attend an orientation session. Teachers Academy personnel will contact you regarding your assigned orientation session.

6. When and where should I sign up for student teaching?

• You must fill out an application for student teaching. The applications are available on the BK bulletin board or online (http://www.uncg.edu/ted/teach_acad_applications.html).

• Application forms are due depending on when you plan to student teach (See table above).

• Completed forms should be submitted to Kate Pike in the HDF department office in 248 Stone.

7. What is the technology requirement for Licensure?

• All BK Licensure students must take LIS 120 before they graduate. LIS 120 is a one-hour course that provides training in technology skills.

• All students must also complete a technology portfolio. Materials may be gathered throughout the coursework that students complete, but the actual portfolio will be put together during HDF 360.

8. Where can one find out more information about the BK-Licensure program?

• You are required to view or download the handbook on-line at the HDF web site (www.uncg.edu/hdf/). It is your responsibility to read this document. It has essential information about the BK-Licensure program.

• The handbook is full of information about the program and the procedures for completing the degree. It also has specific information on student teaching and copies of the forms that students will need to complete along the way in order to obtain the degree.

9. Do I have to take HDF 350 & 360?

• HDF 350 is a co-requisite with HDF 425 and HDF 360 is a co-requisite with HDF 435. HDF 350 & HDF 360 are offered each semester and meet your departmental speaking-intensive (SI) requirement. [Early Care and Education majors (ECE) meet the departmental SI requirement with HDF 482; those who aren’t required to take HDF 482, such as 2+ students, should take HDF 350 & 360 to meet the SI requirement.]

10. What are the prerequisites for the methods courses?

• The prereqs for HDF/SES 425 are HDF 250 and SES 242 and a 2.5 GPA. [HDF 250 is waived for 2+ students.]

• The prereqs for HDF/SES 435 are HDF/SES 425 and SES 242 and 2.5 GPA.

11. Will I need liability insurance to participate in practicum experiences and student teaching?

• Yes, liability insurance is required. More information will be provided in HDF/SES 425 which is the first methods course you will take.

• Liability insurance can be purchased through the National Education Association or the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Proof of insurance must be provided before you can begin your placements in the methods courses and student teaching.

12. What are the prerequisites for student teaching?

• HDF/SES 425, 435, and 441 are prereqs for 460—Student Teaching [as well as for HDF 450—ECE Practicum].

• A grade of “C” or better is required in HDF/SES 425, 435, 441.

• It is also recommended that you take TED 516 and KIN 342 before student teaching.

• You must have certification in First Aid and CPR before student teaching.

13. Do I need to do anything special if I plan to student teach in kindergarten?

• We strongly recommend that you enroll in HDF/SES 435 & HDF/SES 441 during the same semester if you plan to student teach in kindergarten.

• We also recommend that one of your placements for 441 or 435 is in a kindergarten classroom.

14. Do you have any other tidbits of wisdom?

• We recommend that you enroll in HDF 452 at the same time as HDF/SES 425.

• Spring only courses: HDF 482, TED 516, NUR 345, SWK 584; Fall only: KIN 342; Summer: SWK 584 & TED 516

15. What is Task Stream?

Task Stream is an on-line system designed to assist students in developing their professional portfolios and for tracking student progress during the BK program. You will learn more about Task Stream in HDF/SES 425 which is the first course in which you will have to upload materials to Task Stream. Additional assignments will be uploaded in HDF/SES 435, HDF/SES 441 and HDF 460. There is an additional fee for Task Stream, $39 for one year or $65 for two years. It is required that all BK students enroll in the Task Stream system. You may sign-up on-line at TaskStream.com.

16. Do I have to take a PRAXIS II exam?

• If you are planning to teach in kindergarten you will need to take the Early Childhood Content Knowledge PRAXIS II exam (#10022).

• It is recommended that students take this after HDF/SES 435 and just before student teaching.
